Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Oct 13/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between
Torres Strait and Cairns.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1024 hPa] near Adelaide extends a ridge and cool, dry S to SE winds
across most of Queensland. The high expected to move slowly eastwards over the
next few days. An upper level trough will move over far southeastern Queensland
during Sunday, accompanied by a weak surface trough and southeasterly change.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Fine across most of Queensland, except for isolated showers over the
Peninsula district with possible isolated late thunderstorms about western Cape
York Peninsula. Light to moderate SW to SE winds over most of the state with
fresh to strong SE'ly winds in the tropics. A Very High fire danger over inland
and western parts of the state.
Forecast for Sunday
Isolated showers developing about the coast and ranges in the far south, with
possible isolated afternoon thunderstorms about the border ranges. Isolated
showers are also possible about the far north of Cape York Peninsula. A cold
morning across most of the state with areas of morning frost about the Granite
Belt. Light to moderate SW to SE winds over most parts, with fresh to strong SE
winds about the northeast coast.
Forecast for Monday
The high will move eastwards into the Tasman Sea and will maintain fine and
mostly sunny conditions across most of Queensland. Isolated showers are expected
to continue about the southeast and northeast coasts in the onshore flow. Fresh
to strong SE winds will continue about the northeast tropical coast. A cool to
cold morning over most of the state, however maximum temperatures should
gradually start to rise close to the seasonal average.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high should drift towards the eastern reaches of the Tasman Sea, but will
still maintain fine and mostly sunny conditions across most of the state.
Isolated showers are expected about the tropical east coast and are likely to
extend further south to the central coast as the wind flow becomes more onshore.
Fresh to strong SE winds will continue about the northeast tropical coast. A
cool morning through most central and eastern districts with maximum
temperatures rising above average in the southwest.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will remain slow-moving over the eastern Tasman Sea, with the ridge
gradually weakening along the Queensland east coast. Isolated showers remain
possible along the east coast north of about Gladstone in the relatively moist
onshore trade wind flow. An upper level trough approaching from the west will
produce some patchy high cloud over southwestern Queensland, while a weak
surface trough will also reach the southern inland, but the dry airmass will
rule out any chance of rainfall with these features. Temperatures will climb to
well above average in the far south ahead of the surface trough.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The high will continue to move eastwards across the Tasman Sea, extending a
ridge along the central and tropical east coast of Queensland. Fine and mostly
sunny across most of the state. Isolated showers should contract north to the
northeast tropics as the ridge along the east coast continues to weaken. The
weak upper level trough will move through southeastern Queensland on Thursday,
and may provide enough instability to produce a few showers over the southeast
corner and adjacent inland, with the slight chance of a thunderstorm or two
about the border ranges. This activity is likely to diminish later in the
outlook period as the upper trough moves offshore. Daytime temperatures are
likely to remain above average over the southern and central districts as winds
tend more N to NE'ly.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
