Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Oct 9/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Fire Weather Warning has been issued for the Channel
Country, Northwest, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and
parts of the Central West districts.
A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters south of Cape Moreton for late
Wednesday.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A ridge lies off the tropical Queensland coast. A surface trough lies over
the far eastern tropics to the Wide Bay. A new surface trough is expected to
move over western and southwest Queensland during Wednesday, with an upper
trough intensifying near the southwest border at the same time.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Partly cloudy over the Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast
districts with isolated showers, mainly near the coast. Patchy cloud with
isolated thunderstorms over the northwest, but little if any rainfall. Fine and
mostly clear over the remainder of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE winds
across the northern tropics, tending SW to SE over the interior. Moderate NW to
NE winds along the central and southern coasts, shifting E to SE over the far
southeast.
Forecast for Wednesday
Cloud increasing over the west and southern interior with patchy light rain
and isolated thunderstorms, though little rainfall is expected. Isolated showers
and afternoon and evening thunderstorms over central and southeast districts.
Fine and partly cloudy elsewhere. Moderate to fresh and gusty NE to NW winds,
strengthening along the far southern coast in the evening. Moderate to fresh and
gusty W to NW winds over the central, southern and southeast interior. Very warm
to hot ahead of a cooler fresh to strong and gusty SW to SE change spreading
over the west and southwest during the day. A Severe Fire Danger in the Channel
Country, Northwest, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and
Central West districts. A Very High Fire Danger in the Southeast Coast, Wide Bay
and Burnett, Capricornia, Central Highlands and Coalfields, and Northern
Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The surface and upper trough system is expected to move eastwards across the
state. As a result, a cloud band with showers, patchy rain and isolated
thunderstorms will affect areas from the northwest to the southeast of the state
and spread eastwards into central districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
are likely over the northeast tropics ahead of the surface trough. Warm
conditions are expected ahead of the troughs over the eastern tropics. Much
cooler conditions elsewhere with fresh to strong and gusty SW to SE winds
spreading across most of the state from the west by late in the day or night. An
elevated fire danger in most districts.
Forecast for Friday
The surface and upper trough system will move off the east coast during
Friday morning, clearing the cloud, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms. An
unseasonably cold airmass will become established in the wake of this trough,
affecting southern and western Queensland and penetrating well into the southern
tropics. Cloudy conditions are likely in the cold southwesterly flow over the
southeast inland, and there is the chance of some showers over the southern
Darling Downs and Granite Belt that may fall as sleet for a short period in the
morning. Isolated showers about the northeast tropics in the onshore flow.
Forecast for Saturday
Stable conditions over most of the state as a high pressure system becomes
established over southeastern Australia. Cool to cold and dry conditions
continuing for most areas away from the northern tropics, with early frost
likely through the southern Darling Downs. Isolated showers in the moist onshore
flow for the northeast Peninsula. Strong winds are expected along the far
northeastern coast, and in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria during the
morning.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
Mostly fine across the state. Moist SE winds are likely to bring isolated
showers to parts of the east coast as a strong ridge spreads across the state
from the high pressure system moving into the Tasman Sea. Temperatures gradually
returning to average about eastern districts, and rising to above average in the
west.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
