Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Oct 9/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A ridge lies off the tropical Queensland coast. A surface trough lies over
the far eastern tropics to the Wide Bay. A deep slow moving low is located near
New Zealand. A new surface trough is expected to move over western and southwest
Queensland during Wednesday.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Partly cloudy with isolated light showers and drizzle over the far southeast
clearing during the morning. Partly cloudy with isolated showers over the
Capricornia and Wide Bay and Burnett. Fine and mostly sunny over the remainder
of the state. A warm day across most of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE
winds across the northern tropics. Light to moderate mostly SW to SE winds over
the interior. Light to moderate NW to NE winds along the central and southern
coasts, freshening in the afternoon ahead of a late E to SE change in the far
southeast. A Very High Fire Danger in the Southeast Coast, Darling Downs and
Granite Belt, Wide Bay and Burnett, Capricornia, and Central Highlands and
Coalfields districts.
Forecast for Wednesday
A significant upper level trough is expected to move towards the southwest of
the state late in the day, while a surface trough is expected to move over the
west and southwest during the day. This will increase middle level cloud over
the west and southern interior with some patchy light rain and isolated
thunderstorms developing late in the day; though little if any rainfall is
expected at this stage. Isolated showers and afternoon and evening thunderstorms
over central and southeast districts to the east of the surface trough. Fine and
partly cloudy elsewhere. Very warm to hot across most of the state, particularly
in central and southeast districts, ahead of the cooler fresh and gusty SW to SE
winds spreading over the west and southwest during the day. An elevated fire
danger in the west, central and southern districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The surface and upper trough system is expected to move eastwards across the
state. As a result, it is expected that a cloud band with showers, patchy rain
and isolated thunderstorms will affect areas from the northwest to the southeast
of the state and spread eastwards into central districts. Some uncertainty
remains about how widespread this activity will be. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms are likely over the northeast tropics ahead of the surface trough.
Warm conditions are expected ahead of the troughs over the eastern tropics. Much
cooler conditions elsewhere with fresh to strong and gusty SW to SE winds
spreading across most of the state from the west by late in the day or night. An
elevated fire danger in most districts.
Forecast for Friday
The surface and upper trough system will move off the east coast during
Friday morning, clearing the cloud, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms. An
unseasonably cold airmass will become established in the wake of this trough,
affecting southern and western Queensland and penetrating well into the southern
tropics. Cloudy conditions are likely in the cold southwesterly flow over the
southeast inland, and there is the chance of some showers over the southern
Darling Downs and Granite Belt that may fall as sleet for a short period in the
morning. Isolated showers about the northeast tropics in the onshore flow.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
Mostly fine across the state, though moist SE winds are likely to bring
isolated showers to the northeast tropics as a strong ridge spreads across the
state from a large high over the Great Australian Bight. THis high is likely to
move east into the Tasman Sea during Sunday and on Monday. As a result, isolated
showers are likely to return to the southeast of the state from Sunday due to
the onshore SE winds and another upper trough moving over the region.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
