Weather Situation
A high [1025 hPa] off the New South Wales coast extends a firm ridge along
Queensland's east coast. The high is expected to drift slowly eastwards and
weaken during today with the ridge along the east coast also weakening.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Mainly isolated showers along coast and nearby inland areas north of about
St. Lawrence tending scattered about the North Tropical Coast during the
morning. Isolated showers about the Peninsula also about the Gulf of
Carpentaria coast. Fine and mostly sunny conditions through the remainder of the
state, although cloud will develop during the day about the far west of the
state. A Very High fire danger about the Channel Country, Central West and
Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts. Light to moderate SE to NE
winds across most of the state, tending NW during the day over the southern
interior. Fresh to strong SE winds along the tropical east coast.
Forecast for Friday
The high in the Tasman Sea is expected to weaken further with winds
continuing to decrease about the east coast of Queensland. A surface trough will
most likely move east over New South Wales, producing some patchy cloud near the
southern border of Queensland. Temperatures will warm through southern districts
ahead of this trough. Isolated showers will occur about the east coast north of
about St. Lawrence, tending scattered during the morning about the North
Tropical Coast. Isolated showers are also expected through the Peninsula and
about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast.
Forecast for Saturday
The high in the Tasman Sea should continue to extend a weak ridge along the
east coast of Queensland whilst a new trough will approach the far southwest of
the state late in the day, generating some patchy cloud. Isolated shower
activity will continue about the east tropical coast in a moist onshore wind
flow, also extending through the Peninsula and Gulf Country districts. Fine and
mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere. Very warm to hot maximum
temperatures will occur through southern districts in a N'ly wind flow ahead of
the new surface trough.
Forecast for Sunday
The surface trough will most likely move eastwards across southern Queensland
and reach the far southeast coast late in the day. This trough may lead to
isolated showers developing late in the day about the Gold Coast and southern
border ranges. Very warm to hot conditions are expected about the south and
southeast of the state ahead of this trough. Fine and mostly sunny across most
of the remainder of the state, although isolated showers are expected about the
far northeast tropics and Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Showers may tend to rain
at times about the far north of Cape York Peninsula as an upper trough moves
through the area.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
Most of the state should remain fine through the outlook period. However, the
trough in the southeast of the state should move northwards through southern
waters on Monday with a cooler S'ly wind change generating showers about the far
southeast of the state on Monday and Tuesday. Another trough may move through
the far southeast on Wednesday with showers persisting about far southeast
districts. Isolated showers over the far north tropics will contract north to
Torres Strait during Tuesday and Wednesday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
