Weather Situation
A high [1030 hPa] over southeastern Australia extends a firm ridge along the
east Queensland coast. The high is expected to move eastwards into the western
Tasman Sea late today, maintaining the ridge along the east coast.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Cloudy over the east tropical coast and adjacent inland with scattered
squally showers and drizzle areas. Isolated showers elsewhere over the tropics
and along the remaining east coast, though clearing south of Yeppoon during the
afternoon. Cloud increasing through western Queensland during the afternoon
though with little or no rain. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere apart from some
cloud and possible isolated showers through the central interior north of
Clermont. A cool morning through the southeast interior. Fresh to strong SE
winds about the east coast, tending moderate E to NE about the far southern
coast during the day. Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, fresh at times over the
tropics and through the central west. A Very High fire danger about the
Peninsula, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and Central Highlands and
Coalfields districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The high is expected to move slowly eastwards into the Tasman Sea with the
ridge along the east coast weakening and strong winds contracting to north of
Bowen. Isolated showers will contract to areas north of about Gladstone, tending
scattered about the North Tropical Coast until the afternoon. Isolated showers
will also continue through the Peninsula and about the Gulf of Carpentaria
coast. Cloud will persist through far western Queensland ahead of a trough
moving east over central Australia though with little or no rainfall expected.
Fine and sunny conditions will occur elsewhere. Maximum temperatures will warm
through southern districts as winds tend N'ly ahead of the trough.
Forecast for Friday
The high in the Tasman Sea is expected to weaken further with winds
continuing to decrease about the east coast of Queensland. The surface trough
will most likely move east over New South Wales, producing some patchy cloud
near the southern border of Queensland though with no rainfall expected.
Temperatures will warm further through southern districts ahead of this trough.
Isolated showers will occur about the east coast north of about Gladstone,
tending scattered during the morning about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated
showers are also expected through the Peninsula and about the Gulf of
Carpentaria coast.
Forecast for Saturday
The high in the Tasman Sea should continue to extend a weak ridge along the
east coast of Queensland whilst a new trough will approach the far southwest of
the state late in the day, generating some patchy cloud though with no rainfall
expected. Isolated shower activity will continue about the east tropical coast
in a moist onshore wind flow, also extending through the Peninsula and Gulf
Country districts. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere. Very
warm to hot maximum temperatures will occur through southern districts in a N'ly
wind flow ahead of the new surface trough.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
Most of the state should remain fine during the outlook period. A weak ridge
will persist along much of the east coast. The surface trough will most likely
move east over southern Queensland on Sunday, generating some cloud though
little or no rainfall before contracting off the southeast coast Sunday night. A
cooler S'ly wind change should then extend north through southern Queensland
waters on Monday, generating some showers near the coast. A new trough will then
most likely move rapidly east through southern Queensland on Tuesday, again with
little or no rainfall and warm maximum temperatures in the N'ly wind flow ahead
of the trough. Isolated showers over the tropics will contract north to Cape
York Peninsula and Torres Strait during the outlook period.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Wednesday.
