MELBOURNE - Sep 27/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A cold front approaching from the west will catch up to a trough over central Victoria by about midday today. The front will then extend to the east of the State on Friday night. A cold and unstable west to southwesterly airflow will follow over Victoria on Saturday as a deep low pressure system clips the southern Tasmanian coast. A high pressure system will develop over the Bight later Saturday then extend a ridge over inland Victoria on Sunday. The high will reach western Victoria on Monday. Forecast for the rest of FridayAreas of rain and isolated thunderstorms developing in the morning then contracting eastwards during the day, Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms following, mainly near and south of the ranges. Snow developing on the western ranges and Alpine resorts at night. Mild moderate to fresh north to northwesterly winds, strong to gale force over the eastern ranges before a colder west to northwesterly change develops in the southwest by midday then extends to central areas in the evening.Saturday 29 SeptemberScattered showers with local hail and thunder, mainly over southern and mountain districts but more widespread about the southwest and South Gippsland coasts. Snowfalls down to 500 metres. A cold day with fresh and gusty west to southwesterly winds, strong along the coastal fringe.Sunday 30 SeptemberMorning frost patches inland. Isolated showers on and south of the ranges, contracting to coastal areas by the evening. Cool with moderate to fresh southwest winds, easing during the day.Monday 1 OctoberLocal morning frosts inland. Isolated showers in the south, clearing during the afternoon.
