Weather Situation
A high near New Zealand extends a weak ridge along the east tropical coast of
Queensland. A trough extends from northwest Queensland to the southern interior
and is expected to move east and reach the far southern coast late this evening.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Early morning fogs over eastern districts and near the southern Gulf of
Carpentaria coast. Patchy cloud with light rain and isolated thunderstorms over
western districts, contracting east during the day. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms in southeast and central districts, becoming scattered in the
afternoon. Some thunderstorms are likely to be severe. Fine and mostly sunny
elsewhere. A very warm to hot day for most areas apart from the far southwest
and parts of the northern tropics. A Very High to Severe fire danger through
western districts, a Very High fire danger through central and southeast
districts, and the southern tropical interior. Light to moderate SE to NE winds
over the tropics. A cooler, fresh and gusty S'ly change extending east through
the southwest and southern inland parts of the state. Light to moderate NW to NE
winds elsewhere, fresh at times near the coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper level trough is expected to contract off the southern coast in the
early hours, decreasing instability over southeastern Queensland. The surface
trough will also contract off the southern coast and shift north into central
waters during the day. A high moving east over southeastern Australia will
extend a fresh to strong S'ly wind flow through southern Queensland waters in
the wake of the trough. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms are expected
through central districts and the northern Wide Bay due to the passage of the
surface trough. Mostly fine conditions will occur along the southern coast with
only isolated showers. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will persist elsewhere
under the influence of a ridge. Cooler temperatures will extend through far
southern parts of the state in the S'ly wind flow.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will move east into the Tasman Sea strengthening the ridge along the
east coast of Queensland. Fresh SE winds and isolated showers will extend north
along the east coast to the southern tropics. Unstable conditions will persist
through central districts and extend into parts of the Central West and Maranoa
and Warrego districts to the east of a surface trough that will deepen during
the day, with isolated showers and afternoon and evening thunderstorms expected.
High cloud will enter the far west of the state late in the day though with no
rain. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will persist elsewhere under the
influence of a ridge. Very warm to hot temperatures in the west of the state.
Forecast for Thursday
The high will move east towards New Zealand maintaining the ridge along the
Queensland coast with showers extending into the northern tropics. An unstable
airmass will extend from the southern tropical coast through the central
interior to the Warrego with showers and possible thunderstorms expected. The
next upper trough intensifies and moves into the Great Australian Bight,
increasing cloud over the far west of the state with possible thunderstorms
though producing little if any rain. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will
persist elsewhere under the influence of a ridge. Very warm to hot temperatures
in the west, with increasing fire dangers.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The high will continue moving eastwards relaxing the ridge along the east
coast of Queensland during the outlook period and decreasing the shower activity
along the tropical coast. Cloudy conditions with isolated thunderstorms will
remain over the southwest as the upper level trough shifts east in southeastern
Australia. The upper level trough and associated surface trough will most likely
move over the interior of Queensland on Saturday, generating a band of shower
and thunderstorm activity with its passage, and passing off the southern and
central coast during Sunday. Hot temperatures will again develop over the
interior of the state in the N'ly wind flow ahead of the trough, with increasing
fire dangers.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
