Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Sep 20/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Fire Weather Warning is current for the Channel Country and
parts of the Northwest, Central West and Maranoa and Warrego districts.

Weather Situation
A high near New Zealand extends a weak ridge along the tropical east coast of
Queensland. A trough over far southwestern Queensland is expected to remain slow
moving today before moving eastwards across western and southern Queensland on
Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Cloudy with isolated thunderstorms over the southern interior but with little
rainfall expected in most areas. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
over the southeast, mainly afternoon and evening; a few of the thunderstorms may
be severe. Morning fogs in the east. Isolated light showers over Torres Strait.
A very warm to hot day across most of the state. Severe Fire Danger in the
Channel Country and parts of the Northwest, Central West and Maranoa and Warrego
districts. A Very High Fire Danger in the Darling Downs and Granite Belt,
Central Highlands and Coalfields and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders
districts.
Forecast for Saturday
An upper trough is expected to move offshore to be replaced by a more stable
upper pattern, and this should lead to fine conditions returning throughout most
of Queensland. A surface trough is expected to lie from western Queensland to
the Southeast Coast district. Some cloud and isolated afternoon and evening
showers are likely about southeast Queensland near and north of the surface
trough, with a few thunderstorms possible about the central highlands. A few
light showers are also likely over Torres Strait. Remaining fine over the
northern tropics though some morning fogs are likely near the coast. High cloud
is likely to redevelop over the Channel Country late in the day but no rainfall
is expected. Temperatures remaining above average across most of the state,
except the far northern tropics, with a high to very high fire danger expected
in many areas.
Forecast for Sunday
Another upper trough is expected to move over southeast Australia and extend
more middle and high level cloud over the southwest and southern interior but
with little if any rain. The surface trough is expected to lie from northwest
Queensland to the southeast interior, and should trigger at least isolated
showers and thunderstorms over the central interior and southeast Queensland. A
few light showers are likely over Torres Strait. Remaining fine over the
northern tropics though some morning fogs are likely near the coast.
Temperatures remaining above average across most of the state, except the far
northern tropics.
Forecast for Monday
The surface trough is likely to lie from northwestern Queensland to the
southeast interior, with unstable conditions east of the trough. The assistance
of yet another upper level trough should lead to scattered showers and
thunderstorms over southeast and parts of central Queensland.  A high near New
Zealand is expected to extend a weak ridge along the north tropical coast and
maintain fine conditions across most of the northern tropics with only isolated
showers expected over Torres Strait. Fine elsewhere. Temperatures remaining
above average across most of the state, except the far northern tropics. A
little cooler in the far southwest.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The situation remains complex during next week, typical for Spring. A high
east of New Zealand is expected to extend a weak ridge along the north tropical
coast and maintain fine conditions across most of the northern tropics. The
surface trough is expected to initially remain slow moving and lie from
northwest Queensland to the southeast region on Tuesday, before weakening during
Wednesday. Some showers and thunderstorms are likely over the southeast and
parts of central Queensland associated with this trough on Tuesday as an upper
level trough moves across southern Queensland. This activity is likely to be
more isolated on Wednesday and mostly contract into central districts, as a high
moves into the Tasman Sea and extends a ridge along the east Queensland coast.
Isolated showers are expected about the coast and central interior on Thursday.
Remaining fine in the west and most of the southern interior, with increasing
high cloud late Thursday. Temperatures are expected to remain generally above
average in most areas.
