Weather Situation
A high over the Tasman Sea and the connecting ridge onto the Queensland coast
are both weakening. A trough is approaching the east coast of Queensland from
the west and is expected to clear the southeast coast overnight Thursday. This
trough will move further north along the central coast during Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Isolated showers about exposed points of the east coast, generally dry over
the remainder of the state. A possible shower developing over the southern
Darling Downs late in the day. Gusty SW winds developing over western districts
with severe fire danger. Strong N to NW winds developing about the southeast
coast later in the day. Moderate to fresh SE winds over the tropics. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds over the remainder of Queensland. Generally high to very
high fire danger over the interior of the state.
Forecast for Friday
A new high moves into South Australia from the Great Australian Bight. The
coastal trough has cleared the southeast coast of Queensland early and moves
north through the Wide Bay region by late morning. This trough will reach the
Capricornia in the afternoon with possible isolated showers. Generally dry over
Queensland with decreasing showers over the northeast tropics. Strong S to SE
winds about the southeast coast early. Generally cooler over the west and south
of the state with a little early frost on the Granite Belt.
Forecast for Saturday
The high enters western New South Wales from South Australia. The coastal
trough in Queensland now reaches the southern tropics near Townsville. This
trough also redevelops inland over the central interior. Showers generally about
the NE tropical coast, extending inland in the afternoon near Charters Towers.
Dry over the remainder of the state with some early frost near Roma and the
Granite Belt.
Forecast for Sunday
The New South Wales high moves off the east coast while an upper level trough
develops over western Queensland. This higher level weather feature will deepen
the surface trough over interior Queensland. As the coastal trough continues to
move north into the northeast tropics moisture from this source will flow into
the inland trough and with increasing instability generate showers and
thunderstorms in the afternoon over the central interior. Some isolated showers
are also expected about the southeast coast early, as coastal winds tend
easterly. Temperatures rising a little over the southeast interior with an end
to the early frost.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
As the upper level trough continues to develop the thunderstorm area that
formed over the central interior on Sunday will expand into thundery rain and
spread southeast overnight. Eventually patchy rain areas extending into the
Darling Downs and southeast coast by morning. Rain areas and isolated
thunderstorms remaining over the central interior. During Monday afternoon
thunderstorms will peak again over the eastern interior and spread out into
thundery rain again further east. Meanwhile showers will decrease over the
northeast tropics. As the upper level trough moves east rain areas and isolated
thunderstorms will cover most eastern districts including the southeast on
Tuesday. By Wednesday the patchy rain has almost cleared the southeast region
but afternoon showers and thunderstorms will redevelop over the Darling Downs
district. No change in the weather for the rest of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
