Weather Situation
A high over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge into Queensland. A surface trough
is expected to move into southwestern Queensland early Thursday and move
northeast during the day.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Light isolated showers will generally be confined to the northeast tropical
coast. It will remain fine over the rest of the state. Moderate E to SE winds
about the east coast tending fresh to strong on the northeast tropical coast.
Light to moderate NE to SE winds generally over the remainder of the state. A
High to Very High fire danger over the interior.
Forecast for Thursday
Isolated showers are possible about the east coast, with most of these
showers occurring in the morning. There will be a chance of a light shower late
in the day in southern parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt. It will be
fine and warm throughout the remainder of the state. Light to moderate S to SE
winds in northern parts of the state, tending light to moderate NE to NW in
southern parts and increasing to fresh to strong later in the day in coastal
areas south of Fraser Island. Winds tending moderate to fresh and gusty SW to SE
behind the trough. A Very High to Severe Fire Danger in the North West, Central
West, Channel Country, Maranoa and Warrego, and Darling Downs and Granite Belt
districts. A High to Very High Fire Danger in the Northern Goldfields and Upper
Flinders.
Forecast for Friday
The surface trough will clear the southeast coast early then moves through
the Wide Bay region in the late morning and eventually the Capricorn district
late in the day. There will be a possible early shower on the southeast coast in
the early morning associated with the change, though any falls will be light and
insignificant. Possible isolated afternoon showers will develop in the Capricorn
district with the change. Isolated showers along the north tropical coast will
clear in the morning, while it will remain fine over the rest of the state.
Early frost will return to the Granite Belt in the morning. Strong S to SW winds
will ease about the southeast coast early in the day.
Forecast for Saturday
A new high moving across South Australia and Victoria is likely to extend a
ridge over eastern Queensland. The coastal trough will be along the northeast
tropical coast with isolated showers likely. This trough will extend inland to
the southwest and with isolated afternoon showers possible. Early frost areas
will expand over the southern Darling Downs and near Roma.
Forecast for Sunday
The high will weaken in the Tasman Sea as another builds over the Great
Australian Bight. An upper level trough will deepen over the southeastern part
of the country inducing a surface trough in the interior of Queensland. This
surface trough will trigger isolated showers and thunderstorms in the central
interior of the state. Isolated showers are possible along the east coast as the
two highs maintain a ridge into eastern Queensland.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The new high will move into the Tasman Sea and strengthen as the upper level
trough deepens further over New South Wales. The inland surface trough most
likely again initiate scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in the
central and southern interior on Monday with a moist onshore flow leading to
isolated showers elsewhere in the state east of the trough. The movement of the
upper level trough is uncertain at this stage, however the most likely scenario
is for the upper level trough to move northeast and induce a surface trough
along the Capricornia or Wide Bay coasts. This in turn will see an increase in
showers and thunderstorms in the southeast and southern interior on Tuesday with
a possible clearance on Wednesday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
