MELBOURNE - Sep 11/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coastal waters between Torres Strait and Cooktown. A Strong Wind Warning is current for Northeast Gulf Waters north of 11 degrees South. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge into Queensland. A trough is expected to move north along the central and southeast coast on Friday. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Possible isolated showers about exposed points of the east coast this morning, isolated showers generally about the northeast tropical coast. Some early morning fog patches over eastern districts. Remaining dry over the interior. Moderate E to SE winds about the east coast increasing to fresh to strong on the northeast tropical coast. Light to moderate NE to SE winds generally over the remainder. A high to very high fire danger over the interior. Forecast for Thursday A new trough enters the Channel Country with a gusty SW'ly wind change. No precipitation is expected with this trough but dust haze. Gusty winds with this change will increase the fire danger over western districts to a severe level. This will lead to a fire weather warning over much of the southwest and southern interior. The trough will eventually reach the northwest of the state and the Darling Downs district late in the day. Possible late isolated showers with the change over the southern Darling Downs. Little change in the weather for the east with isolated showers near the exposed coast and early fog over the eastern interior. Strong NW winds developing off the southeast coast late in the day. Easing SE winds over the tropics. Forecast for Friday A trough clears the southeast coast early then moves through the Wide Bay region in the late morning and eventually the Capricorn district late in the day. Possible early shower on the southeast coast in the early morning associated with the change. Possible isolated afternoon showers developing in the Capricorn district with the change. Showers clearing about the east coast further north. Remaining dry over the interior, cooler in the south following the trough passage. Early frost returning to the Granite Belt in the morning. Strong S to SW winds about the southeast coast early. Forecast for Saturday A new high moving across South Australia is likely to extend a ridge over eastern Queensland with moderate to fresh S to SE winds along the east coast. The coastal trough now reaching the northeast tropical coast and stalling with increasing showers. This trough will extend inland to the southwest and develop with some afternoon showers near Charters Towers. Early frost expanding over the southern Darling Downs and near Roma. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The high is expected to move off the New South Wales coast by Sunday and maintain a ridge into eastern Queensland. As a result, isolated showers are likely to continue about most of the east coast in the onshore airstream. Early frost is possible about the Granite Belt region on Sunday. The surface trough over the interior will deepen as an upper level trough moves in from the west. This will allow for moisture to flow into the interior then lift contributing to a area of showers and thunderstorms developing near Longreach to Charleville by Sunday afternoon. This thunderstorm area will expand as thundery rain and spread southeast on Monday, eventually reaching the southeast coast on Tuesday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday.
