MELBOURNE - Sep 10/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coastal waters between Torres Strait and Cooktown. A Strong Wind Warning is current for Northeast Gulf Waters north of 11 degrees South. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1025 hPa] over the western Tasman Sea is expected to move eastwards during the next few days. The high extends a firm ridge along the tropical Queensland coast. Forecast for the rest of Monday Isolated showers about the east coast north from about Fraser Island. Fine elsewhere, with areas of cloud over eastern districts contracting east tonight. Fresh to strong SE winds about the northeast coast. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Tuesday Isolated showers about the east coast north from about Fraser Island and the WIde Bay, tending to scattered showers about the North Tropical Coast during the morning. Morning fog patches in the east, with possible early frost about the Granite Belt. A warmer day in the west. Fresh to strong SE winds about the northeast coast. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. A Very High Fire Danger in the Northwest, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders forecast districts. Forecast for Wednesday The high is expected to move slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea, but should still be able to maintain fine and mostly sunny conditions across much of Queensland; except for isolated showers about the east coast north from about Fraser Island. Northerly winds ahead of a trough over South Australia are likely to lead to very warm daytime temperatures over the southwest and southern Queensland interior. Forecast for Thursday The high is expected to lie near New Zealand, allowing the strong winds along Queensland's northeast coast to ease. However, isolated showers are expected to continue about most of the tropical coast. A trough is expected to move into the far southwest of the state during the morning, and then extend across the southern interior of the state during the day. Ahead of the trough, north to northwest winds are expected to lead to very warm to hot daytime temperatures with an increased fire danger over the southwest and southern interior. Some cloud is likely to occur with the trough over the central interior and southern Queensland, but conditions are expected to remain fine at this stage. Forecast for Friday The trough and any associated cloud is expected to move off the southern Queensland coast during the morning. Dry and cooler air is expected to spread across most of the state in its wake with fine conditions, as a new high moves into southeast Australia. Isolated showers are likely to contract to northeast Cape York Peninsula. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The new high over southeast Australia is expected to move east over the Tasman Sea, and extend a ridge along the east Queensland coast with onshore winds and isolated showers. Fine across the remainder of the state during the weekend with early frosts about parts of the southeast interior. However, an upper trough is likely to move over the state on Monday with a surface trough expected to develop over the Queensland interior. There is the chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms associated with this trough over the central and southeast interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
