MELBOURNE - Sep 8/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Fire Weather Warning has been cancelled for the Gulf Country, Northwest district, and parts of the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters for Sunday morning. A strong wind warning has been issued for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cooktown for later on Sunday. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A surface trough is moving north along the northeast tropical coast. A ridge of higher pressure occurs over western and southern Queensland, extending from a high in the Great Australian Bight. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Dry over most of the state with possible showers in the tropics, generally in the far northern tropical zone. Moderate SW winds over southern Queensland, moderate to fresh SE winds over the northern half of the state. A high to very high fire danger in the NW region. A moderate to high fire danger about eastern districts, high to very high fire danger over the western interior. Forecast for Sunday The southern high moves across New South Wales and eventually reaches the east coast. Winds rapidly ease over southern Queensland. A chilly morning in the south with early frost over the southern and southeast interior. Isolated showers about the northeast tropical coast, dry over the remainder of the state. Strong SE winds again in the southern Gulf in the morning and developing about the northeast tropical coast later in the day. A moderate to high fire danger over eastern districts. High to very high fire danger in the western interior. Forecast for Monday The high moves off the east coast with the ridge remaining over Queensland. Isolated showers persisting in the northeast tropics and about exposed points of the east coast. A possible early shower on the southern Gulf coast. Dry over the remainder of the state. Early frost now contracting to the Granite Belt as temperatures rise generally. Some high cloud over eastern inland districts with no rain. Strong SE winds persisting about the northeast tropical coast. Forecast for Tuesday The high reforms over the southern Tasman Sea directing NE winds over most of interior Queensland with rising temperatures. Remaining dry over most of the state with isolated showers persisting about the northeast tropical coast and parts of the east coast. A little early frost over the Granite Belt. Strong SE winds continuing in the northeast tropics. Forecast for Wednesday The next trough is approaching the southwest of the state from South Australia as winds shift NW'ly in the far west of Queensland. Maximum temperatures now over 32C in the west and northwest of the state. Little change in the weather from Tuesday with showers about the northeast coast and dry over the remainder of the state. Some early frost persisting in the Granite Belt. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday The next trough enters western districts on Thursday with a SW'ly wind change but no precipitation. Maximum temperatures now just over 30C through the eastern interior and western Darling Downs ahead of the change. By Friday the trough has cleared the southeast coast and now moves north along the central coast. Showers remain in the northeast tropics, dry over the remainder of the state. Temperatures decreasing again over the interior and across the south. By Saturday winds have eased in the south leading to a chilly morning with an expansion of early frost over the Darling Downs. No change in the overall weather with showers remaining in the northeast tropics. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Sunday.
