Weather Situation
A high [1026 hPa] over the northern Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east
tropical Queensland coast. The ridge is expected to weaken during today as the
high moves eastwards across the Tasman Sea. A trough extends over western
Queensland and will move rapidly east across the state during today, approaching
the southern coast late tonight.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Fine and mostly sunny across most of the state. Warm to hot daytime
temperatures through much of southern and western Queensland apart from the far
southwest. Cloud increasing over the southeast in the afternoon and evening with
possible isolated gusty showers or thunderstorms though with little or no rain.
Isolated showers about the east tropical coast, clearing during the afternoon
and evening. Light to moderate SE winds over the tropics, fresh at times along
the northeast coast. Moderate NE to NW winds over the interior ahead of a dry,
fresh and gusty S to SW change extending north and east during the day. Moderate
to fresh NE to NW winds elsewhere, fresh to strong and gusty at times over the
southeast coast. Severe Fire Dangers through the Channel Country, Northwest and
Maranoa and Warrego districts and parts of the Central West and Darling Downs
and Granite Belt districts. A Very High Fire Danger in the Southeast Coast
district.
Forecast for Saturday
The trough and associated patchy cloud and possible isolated light showers
will contract east off the southeast Queensland coast in the early hours of the
morning. A large high over the Great Australian Bight will extend a ridge and a
cooler, dry airmass though western and southern Queensland in the wake of the
trough. Cloud will increase over the northern Peninsula district due to the
passage of a weak trough though only patchy rain or isolated showers are
expected. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will occur elsewhere. Strong winds
are likely in the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria during the morning. A very dry
airmass and gusty SE'ly winds will lead to enhanced fire dangers over the
northwest of the state.
Forecast for Sunday
The high is expected to move east into southeastern Australia. The high will
continue to extend dry S to SE winds across most of the state. SE'ly winds will
increase about the northeast tropical coast, with isolated showers developing in
the moist onshore wind flow. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will extend across
much of the remainder of the state although a weak trough is likely to bring
isolated showers to exposed parts of the southeast coast and southern border
ranges. Strong winds are likely in the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria during the
morning. Early frosts will return to the Maranoa and Darling Downs and Granite
Belt districts.
Forecast for Monday
The high will move east into the Tasman Sea, maintaining a ridge along the
central and tropical coasts of Queensland. A weak surface trough will most
likely develop over the interior of the state. Isolated showers are likely to
extend to most of the east coast in the moist onshore wind flow, developing
about the eastern interior during the afternoon. The remainder of the state
should be fine and mostly sunny as the dry airmass persists in the west. Early
frosts are likely to continue to about isolated parts of the southeast interior.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The high will move slowly east over the Tasman Sea during the outlook period,
extending a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. Isolated showers will
develop about the east coast as the wind flow tends more onshore, although this
activity should contract to the central and tropical coast by Thursday. Fine and
mostly sunny conditions should persist elsewhere under the influence of a dry
airmass. Isolated early morning frosts will most likely continue about the
southeastern interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
