MELBOURNE - Sep 4/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between
Torres Strait and Cooktown.
A Fire Weather Warning has been issued for the Channel Country district and the
Maranoa and Warrego district south and west of Mitchell for Wednesday.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1024 hPa] near the east coast of New South Wales extends a firm ridge
along the northeast Queensland coast. The ridge will relax over the next few
days as the high drifts southeastwards over the Tasman Sea. A trough will enter
southwestern Queensland late Wednesday. Hot, dry and gusty N to NW winds ahead
of the trough will generate Severe to Extreme fire dangers over the southwestern
corner of the state on Wednesday.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Isolated, mostly light showers about the east tropical and central coasts and
islands. Possible isolated light showers near the southern Gulf of Carpentaria
coast. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the
east tropical coast, strong at times north of Cooktown. Moderate N to NE winds
in the southwest, fresh at times. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. A
Very High fire danger in the Channel Country district.
Forecast for Wednesday
Isolated showers about the east coast north from Fraser Island, with some
cloud and possible drizzle over adjacent inland areas. Isolated light showers
about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere.
Possible early frost patches about the Granite Belt and eastern Darling Downs. A
hot and dry day over the southwestern corner of the state with strong and gusty
N to NW winds. Moderate to fresh NW to NE winds elsewhere over the interior and
southern coast. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds about the east tropical and
central coasts. A Severe fire danger over the Maranoa and Warrego district south
and west of Mitchell, increasing to an Extreme fire danger over the Channel
Country district. A Very High fire danger elsewhere over the Maranoa and Warrego
district and through the Central West and Darling Downs and Granite Belt
districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The trough is expected to become slow moving over the interior of the state
and weaken as a second trough approaches the western border. Warm to hot N to NW
winds and elevated fire dangers will extend east into the Maranoa and southeast
districts. N'ly winds are also expected to strengthen over the far southern
coast during the afternoon and evening. Some cloud may accompany the trough
though no rainfall is expected at this stage. A weak ridge will persist along
the east tropical coast, with isolated showers continuing in the onshore wind
flow.
Forecast for Friday
The second trough will most likely move rapidly east over the interior of the
state. Warm to hot daytime temperatures will again extend through much of
southern Queensland and the central interior in the N to NW wind flow ahead of
the second trough. There is some possibility of isolated gusty shower or
thunderstorm activity developing in the afternoon over the southern and
southeast interior, particularly about the southern border, though at this stage
little or no rainfall is expected. Isolated shower activity will occur about the
east tropical coast north of about Ingham in the continuing moist onshore wind
flow.
Forecast for Saturday
The trough will most likely contract east off the southeast Queensland coast
in the early hours of the morning. The associated patchy cloud band and possible
isolated shower or thunderstorm activity will clear southeast districts during
the morning, with little rainfall expected at this stage. A large high over the
Great Australian Bight will extend a ridge and a cooler, dry airmass though
western and southern Queensland in the wake of the trough. Cloud will increase
over the northern Peninsula district due to the passage of a weak trough though
only patchy rain or isolated showers are expected. Fine and mostly sunny
conditions are expected over the remainder of the tropics and central
Queensland.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The high will move slowly east over southeastern Australia and into the
Tasman Sea during the outlook period, extending a ridge along the east coast of
Queensland. Isolated showers will develop about the east coast as the wind flow
tends more moist onshore. A surface trough will most likely develop over the
interior of the state on Monday, with possible isolated showers developing over
the eastern interior in the moist NE'ly wind flow to the east of the trough.
Fine and mostly sunny conditions should persist in the west under the influence
of a dry airmass. Isolated early morning frosts will most likely return to the
southeastern interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
