web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1023 hPa] over eastern New South Wales is expected to move slowly
eastwards into the Tasman Sea during today, maintaining a firm ridge along the
northeast tropical coast.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Isolated, mostly light showers about the east tropical and central coasts and
islands. Possible isolated light showers near the southern Gulf of Carpentaria
coast and about Fraser Island and the Wide Bay coast. Fine and mostly sunny
elsewhere. A cool morning over much of the state, particularly through the
southeastern interior where early frosts are likely. Moderate to fresh SE winds
along the east tropical coast, strong at times north of Cooktown. A warm day in
the southwest with moderate N to NE winds, fresh at times. Light to moderate SE
to NE winds elsewhere. A Very High fire danger in the Channel Country
district.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will move further southeast over the Tasman Sea, maintaining a ridge
along the east Queensland coast. Isolated showers will occur about the east
coast north from Fraser Island in the moist onshore wind flow, with possible
drizzle over adjacent inland areas. Isolated light showers are expected about
the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are
expected over the remainder of the state, with early frost patches contracting
to the Granite Belt and eastern Darling Downs. A trough will enter the far
southwest of the state late in the day, generating some cloud though with no
rainfall expected. Hot, dry and gusty NW'ly winds ahead of the trough will lead
to increasing fire dangers through the southwestern corner of the state.
Forecast for Thursday
The trough is expected to move east over the southern interior of the state.
Warm to hot N to NW winds and elevated fire dangers will extend east into the
Maranoa and southeast districts ahead of the trough. N'ly winds are also
expected to strengthen over the far southern coast during the afternoon and
evening. Some cloud may accompany the trough though no rainfall is expected at
this stage. A weak ridge will persist along the east tropical coast, with
isolated showers continuing in the onshore wind flow.
Forecast for Friday
The trough will most likely weaken near the southeast coast as another trough
moves east into the interior of the state. Warm to hot daytime temperatures will
again extend through much of southern Queensland and the central interior in the
N to NW wind flow ahead of the second trough. There is some possibility of
isolated shower or thunderstorm activity developing in the afternoon over the
southern interior ahead of this trough, though at this stage little or no
rainfall is expected. Isolated shower activity is expected about the east
tropical coast north of about Ingham in the continuing moist onshore wind flow.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The second trough will most likely contract off the southeast coast during
Saturday. A large high over the Great Australian Bight will extend a ridge and a
cooler, dry airmass through much of the state in the wake of the trough.
Isolated showers will persist about the east tropical coast and develop about
the remaining exposed east coast from late Sunday as the high shifts east into
southeastern Australia. Mostly fine conditions should occur over remaining parts
of the state under the influence of the dry airmass. Isolated early morning
frosts will most likely return to the southeastern interior Sunday morning.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
