MELBOURNE - Sep 2/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and Cooktown. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1023 hPa] over New South Wales is expected to move slowly eastwards during the next couple of days. The high extends a ridge along the east Queensland coast and dry SW to SE winds across most of the state. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Isolated showers about the northeast tropical coast. Dry and mostly clear across the remainder of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior and about the east coast. Fresh and gusty SE winds about the northeast tropical coast. Mostly light to moderate E to SE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Monday Isolated showers along the tropical coast, mainly in the north. Dry and mostly sunny across the remainder of the state. A cool to cold morning over most areas with early frosts in the southeast and southern interior. Fresh to strong SE winds about the northeast tropical coast. Mostly light to moderate E to SE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Tuesday The high is expected to move eastwards off the New South Wales and into the far northern Tasman Sea with the ridge persisting over eastern Queensland. Isolated showers are expected to continue about the tropical coast in the onshore flow. Fine and mostly sunny over the remainder of the state and it should become very warm over western and southern districts as winds turn N to NE'ly. Early frost about the southeast interior. Forecast for Wednesday The high is expected to move slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea with the ridge persisting over eastern Queensland. Isolated showers are expected about the most of the east coast and ranges north from about Fraser Island due to the onshore airflow. There is also the chance of some morning drizzle over the adjacent inland areas in central districts. Remaining fine and mostly sunny over the remainder of the state. A trough is expected to enter the Channel Country late on Wednesday but is not expected to lead to any precipitation. However, very warm to hot conditions are expected over western and southern districts due to fresh to strong and gusty NE to NW winds ahead of this trough with increasing fire danger. Early frost is expected to be restricted to near the Granite Belt region. Forecast for Thursday The trough is expected to move across the west and southern interior of the state, preceded by very warm to hot NE to NW winds and an elevated fire danger. These winds are expected to reach strong along the far southern coast during the afternoon and evening. Some cloud may accompany the trough but no significant precipitation is expected at this stage. Isolated showers are likely to persist about the east coast north from Fraser Island in the onshore airflow. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The surface trough is likely to reach the southeast during Friday, preceded by very warm and gusty N to NW winds and an elevated fire danger. No significant precipitation is expected. The trough is then expected to move northeast and lie over the far eastern tropics on Saturday before weakening on Sunday. Another ridge is expected to extend across the state in the wake of the trough with dry and cooler SW to SE winds. Isolated showers are likely to persist about the northeast tropical coast during the outlook period, but also develop along the exposed southern Queensland coast during Sunday due to a S'ly airflow.
