Weather Situation
A high [1025hPa] over southeastern New South Wales will maintain a ridge over
the east coast of Queensland as it shifts east into the Tasman Sea today.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Isolated showers and morning drizzle areas about the east tropical coast and
adjacent inland, tending scattered between Innisfail and Townsville during the
morning. Mostly fine in the southeast with only isolated light showers near the
coast, mostly during the afternoon. High cloud increasing in the southwest this
evening though with no rain. Fine and mostly sunny over the remainder of the
state. A cool morning with early frost patches through the southern and
southeast interior. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds along the east coast,
strengthening north of Cape Melville during the afternoon. Light to moderate NW
to NE winds over the interior of the state.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high should lie near New Zealand and will continue to extend a ridge
along the east Queensland coast. A surface trough will enter far southwestern
Queensland in the evening. Hot and gusty NW'ly winds ahead of the trough will
lead to an increasing fire danger over the southwest of the state. Some high
cloud will extend east over far southern Queensland though with no rain. Strong
winds should continue over tropical waters north of Cape Melville. Mostly fine
conditions are expected over the east tropical coast with just the chance of
isolated light showers. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will occur over the
remainder of the state, with warm to hot maximum temperatures over much of the
interior. Early light frost patches are possible about the Darling Downs and
Granite Belt.
Forecast for Thursday
The trough will move east over the interior of the state as a new high enters
the Great Australian Bight, extending a ridge and a cooler, dry airmass into far
western Queensland in the wake of the trough. The trough may produce isolated
afternoon and evening showers and gusty thunderstorms over the Maranoa, southern
Central Highlands and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts, though with
little or no rain. Hot and gusty NW'ly winds will also extend through these
districts ahead of the trough, leading to increasing fire dangers. Mostly fine
conditions are expected over far southeastern Queensland with just the chance of
isolated late showers or thunderstorms over inland parts as the trough
approaches. Isolated showers will persist through Torres Strait. Fine and mostly
sunny conditions are expected over the remainder of the state.
Forecast for Friday
The surface trough is expected to move northeast over the state to extend
from the central interior to Fraser Island in the evening. It will combine with
an upper level trough to produce a band of isolated showers and thunderstorms
from central districts to the southeast of the state. The high will strengthen
as it shifts east into southeastern Australia, maintaining a firm ridge and dry
conditions through western Queensland and the southern interior. Fine conditions
will occur over northern Queensland apart from isolated showers through Torres
Strait.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The surface trough will contract further east into the Coral Sea on Saturday,
while the upper trough is expected to contract off the east coast of Queensland
during Saturday. Queensland's weather will be largely dominated by the high over
southeastern Australia during the outlook period as it shifts slowly east into
the Tasman Sea. Fresh to strong S to SE winds will extend along the east
Queensland coast over the weekend, before decreasing on Monday as the high
starts to weaken. Isolated showers will occur about the east coast and adjacent
inland in the moist onshore wind flow, with possible isolated thunderstorms over
central districts and the southern tropics on Saturday due to the passage of the
upper trough. Fine conditions will persist over the interior. Early frost
patches will return tot he southern and southeastern interior from Saturday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
