Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 24/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A surface trough over eastern Queensland is expected to move off the southern
coast tonight, but remain over the eastern tropics and the Capricornia on
Saturday. A weakening upper trough is moving east through inland Queensland and
expected to move off the east coast early Saturday. A ridge extends over western
and southern Queensland in the wake of the trough.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Showers and isolated thunderstorms over central districts, the Wide Bay,
Burnett and the Southeast Coast. Isolated showers over the remainder of the
eastern tropics, with some fog about the Central Coast. Fine over the west and
southern interior. Moderate E to SE winds in the tropics, fresh about the
northeast tropical coast. Moderate NE to NW winds over central and southeast
coastal districts. Moderate SW to SE winds elsewhere, fresh and gusty in the
northwest.
Forecast for Saturday
Isolated thunderstorms clearing during the early morning from the Wide Bay
and Burnett and central districts, but isolated showers persisting over the
eastern tropics during the day. Morning fogs about the tropical coast. Dry over
the remainder of the state. Early frost over the southern and southeast
interior. Moderate SW to SE winds, fresh and gusty at times over the northwest
and over the northeast tropical coast. Afternoon NE sea breezes along the
Capricornia and southern Queensland coasts.
Forecast for Sunday
A high pressure system moves across South Australia with light winds over
southern parts of the state. The surface trough is expected to remain over the
eastern tropics and the Capricornia district. A new upper level trough develops
over western Queensland, but dry surface conditions over most of the interior
will keep this area fine. Isolated showers about the eastern tropics, with
showers and isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms over central districts
due to the proximity of the surface trough and the increased instability from
the upper trough. Early frost over the southern and southeast interior.
Forecast for Monday
The upper level trough moves over the southeast and central districts,
clearing the coast overnight. The high is expected to move into the Tasman Sea
with a ridge and SE winds developing along most of the east coast with isolated
showers over most eastern districts. More unstable conditions may lead to
showers and thunderstorms over central districts and the Wide Bay and Burnett.
Dry over the remainder of the state. Early frosts about the southeast interior.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high is expected to move towards New Zealand with the ridge persisting
over eastern Queensland with SE to NE winds. Isolated showers about the east
coast and adjacent inland areas. Remaining fine over the remainder of the state.
Winds are expected to turn warmer northerly over the interior with maximum
temperatures increasing to above average and an increasing fire danger. Early
frost confined to the southeast Darling Downs and Granite Belt.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
A ridge of high pressure is expected to persist over eastern Queensland but
weaken late in the week as a new surface trough enters the far west during
Wednesday and moves across the interior during Thursday and Friday. Fresh and
gusty north to northwest winds over the interior ahead of the trough, with
maximum temperatures rising to well above the August average with an increased
fire danger, particularly over western and southern Queensland. Isolated showers
and thunderstorms may accompany the trough as it move east over southern
Queensland, more likely over central and southeast Queensland on Friday as the
system encounters higher moisture. Otherwise, isolated showers about the east
coast are expected to contract to the northeast tropics by the end of the week
as the ridge weakens.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
