Australia -- Victoria Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 23/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A deep low pressure system south of the Bight will move towards Tasmania later today and an upper level trough crosses Victoria. The deep low will cross southern Tasmania on Friday before it moves southeastwards, resulting in a cold, vigorous and unstable westerly airstream over Victoria. A cold front embedded in this airstream will cross southern Victoria on Saturday night, reaching the Tasman Sea by early Sunday.
Forecast for the rest of ThursdayShowers, most extensive in the west and along the northern slopes of the dividing range, and tending to rain areas about the northeast ranges. The chance of hail and thunder, mainly in the afternoon. Snowfalls lowering to 1000 metres during the evening. Mostly dry and mild over East Gippsland. Cool to cold and becoming mostly cloudy elsewhere with moderate to fresh northwest to westerly winds, squally with showers and storms.Friday 24 AugustScattered showers, isolated over the northwest and far southeast. Isolated hail and thunder, mainly near the coast. Showers falling as snow above 800 metres, rising to 1000 metres by the end of the day. Cool to cold with fresh to strong and squally west to northwesterly winds.Saturday 25 AugustScattered showers over the southwest and about the northeast ranges. Isolated showers over most remaining districts, but dry over East Gippsland. Generally cool with fresh northwesterly winds, stronger about the west and central coast.Sunday 26 AugustScattered showers in the southwest and about the eastern ranges and isolated showers elsewhere. Cool to cold with moderate to fresh west to southwest wind, strong at times on the coast.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Thursday.Product IDV10310
