MELBOURNE - Aug 21/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Fire Weather Warning has been issued for the Channel Country for Wednesday. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure system over the northern Tasman Sea will remain slow moving, maintaining dry winds over southern Queensland. A surface trough will move into southwestern Queensland during Wednesday as an upper trough builds over central Australia. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Isolated showers about the tropics and into the central interior, with isolated thunderstorms possible about western Cape York Peninsula. Fine elsewhere, with cloudy conditions in the south. Moderate to fresh SE winds in the tropics, light to moderate NE to NW elsewhere. A very high fire danger in the Channel Country. Forecast for Wednesday Isolated showers about the tropical east coast, tending to drizzle about the North Tropical Coast in the morning. Early light rain areas over the southeast interior, with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms developing in the afternoon. Isolated showers in remaining eastern districts developing during the afternoon, with isolated thunderstorms over the western Peninsula. Light to moderate SE to NE in the tropics, fresh at times along the far northern coast. Mostly moderate NE to NW winds in southern districts, fresh and gusty in the southwest. A severe fire danger in the Channel Country. Forecast for Thursday The surface trough will move east over western Queensland, extending from the Gulf Country to the southeast interior by evening. The trough is expected to produce a band of showers and thunderstorms with its passage, extending from the Gulf Country though the southern tropics and central districts and into the southern interior. An upper level trough will generate patchy light rain and possible isolated storms in the southwest of the state, gradually clearing to the east. Only isolated showers about coastal districts in a more stable airmass away from the trough. Very warm to hot maximum temperatures will occur over much of the state, with fire dangers increasing through the southern interior in a fresh and gusty N'ly wind flow. Forecast for Friday The trough will move through eastern Queensland during the day and off the east coast at night. A corresponding band of showers and thunderstorms will move through the eastern interior and contract to the coast in the evening. Fine and dry conditions in the west. Very warm to hot maximum temperatures over the southeast, with fire dangers increasing slightly in the southeast corner. Forecast for Saturday The trough will move further northwards while the upper trough will weaken as it moves offshore. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms are expected over the central parts of the state, clearing to the east. Isolated afternoon showers elsewhere in the tropical interior, while onshore winds will produce isolated showers along the tropical coast. Drier SW to S'ly winds in the west of the state and remaining fine, with early morning frost over the southern interior. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday A new upper trough will likely develop over western Queensland during Sunday, and continue moving east early next week. But dry surface conditions over the interior will keep most of the state fine. Isolated showers expected to continue through most eastern districts, especially in the tropics. A high pressure system will move through northern NSW with light winds through southern Queensland. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Wednesday.
