Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 18/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high pressure system in the Great Australian Bight will move eastwards over
New South Wales today, extending a cool, dry wind flow into southern Queensland.
An upper level trough will move east over the interior of the state today.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Mostly fine over the Peninsula district with only isolated light showers.
Cloud increasing elsewhere northeast of about St Lawrence to Normanton with
patchy light rain developing. High cloud extending east over southern and
western districts though remaining fine. A cold morning with widespread early
frosts through the southern, central and southeast interior. Moderate to fresh
SE'ly winds along the east coast north of Fraser Island. Light to moderate SW to
SE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
The upper trough will move eastwards into the Coral Sea with cloud and patchy
rain clearing the central coast and Fraser Island in the early hours of the
morning. Conditions will remain cloudy over the northern and eastern tropics due
to a moist wind flow with isolated light showers expected. The high will move
slowly east into the Tasman Sea, maintaining a ridge and fine conditions over
remaining parts of the state. Some high cloud will develop through southern
districts ahead of the next upper level trough though with no rain. Widespread
early frosts are likely through the southern, central and southeast
interior.
Forecast for Tuesday
A trough will move east over central Australia and approach western
Queensland. Winds will tend N'ly over the interior ahead of the trough,
resulting in very warm maximum temperatures, particularly in the west. Early
frost areas will contract to the Granite Belt. High cloud will increase over the
far southern interior though with no rain. Isolated light showers will develop
from the southern tropical interior into the central west and also possibly over
southeast inland parts in an unstable and moist wind flow. Isolated showers will
persist about the east tropical and central coasts, extending to the west
Peninsula coast in the afternoon with possible isolated thunderstorms.
Forecast for Wednesday
A trough will persist to the southwest of Queensland as a new low develops
south of the Great Australian Bight. Temperatures will increase further over
western and southern parts of the state, resulting in increasing fire dangers,
particularly over the Channel Country and Warrego districts in a dry, freshening
N'ly wind flow. A ridge will persist over far southeastern Queensland, with just
the chance of isolated showers expected due to the passage of an upper trough.
Instability will increase elsewhere over the eastern half of the state, with
isolated showers and possible afternoon thunderstorms expected. Conditions will
remain fine in the far west due to a dry airmass.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The trough will move east over central and southern Queensland, most likely
contracting off the southern Queensland coast Friday afternoon or evening. The
trough will generate isolated showers and thunderstorms with its passage.
Temperatures will be well above the August average over much of the state in the
N'ly wind flow ahead of the trough, with increasing fire dangers, particularly
through southern districts. A high pressure system will move east over New South
Wales from late Friday, extending a ridge into southern Queensland in the wake
of the trough. A moist, onshore wind flow will maintain isolated showers over
the tropics, particularly along the east tropical coast.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Sunday.
