Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 7/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1025 hPa] over northern New South Wales extends a ridge across
Southern Queensland and along the tropical east coast. The high will move
northeastwards into southeast Queensland during Wednesday and weaken. A cold
front will approach the southwest border of Queensland late on Wednesday.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Fine and clear conditions almost throughout Queensland, with just isolated
showers about the east coast north of Cooktown. Light winds over the south.
Light to moderate E to SE winds in the tropics, fresh at times about the east
coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
Remaining fine and sunny over much of the state with only isolated showers in
the northeast tropics. Another cool morning with extensive early frost over
central, southern and southeast districts. Early fogs are likely the central
coast and southern tropical coast. Maximum temperatures will increase over the
western and southern interior as winds tend NE to NW ahead of the approaching
cold front. Light moderate E to SE winds in the tropics, fresh at times about
the east coast.
Forecast for Thursday
The cold front should move northeastwards over the southern half of the state
and clear off the southeast coast late in the evening. A new high will develop
in the Great Australian Bight and extend a ridge into southwest Queensland
behind the cold front. Some high cloud will move across the far south, but no
precipitation is expected due to the dry airmass in place. Most of Queensland
will remain fine and sunny apart from isolated light showers over the far
northeast. Early morning frost is likely about the central and southern
interior. Maximum temperatures should be a few degrees above average about the
northwest, central interior and southeast of the state, and fire dangers will
reach Very High over the southeast during the day. Cool, fresh and gusty S to SW
winds will spread into southern Queensland following the passage of the cold
front.
Forecast for Friday
The cold front should continue to move offshore and a deep low is expected to
develop in the Tasman Sea. The high pressure system in the Great Australian
Bight will intensify and combine with the low in the Tasman Sea to direct fresh,
dry and cold S to SW winds across the state. The SW'ly winds in the southeast of
the state are likely to be fresh to strong and gusty, leading to a significant
wind chill. Fine and sunny but cold across most of the state with only isolated
morning showers about the far northeast of the state.
Forecast for Saturday
The low in the Tasman Sea should continue to move southeastwards across the
Tasman Sea whilst the high will remain in the eastern Great Australian Bight.
The two systems will continue to direct cool SW to SE winds across the state
with strong winds over far southern waters leading to an increasing S'ly swell.
Most of the state should remain fine and sunny with only isolated light showers
possible about the far northeast coast. Cool to cold across the state with
widespread morning frosts through the central and southern interior, extending
into the tropical interior.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The low pressure system should continue to move southeastwards to be east of
New Zealand by Monday whilst the high will move slowly northeastwards to be
centred over New South Wales by Tuesday. Most of the state will remain fine and
sunny throughout the period although isolated showers could affect the southern
Border Ranges and exposed parts of the southeast coast on Sunday and Monday.
Large swells will persist about the exposed southern coast on Sunday but should
ease during Monday. Isolated showers are also possible at times about the
northeast coast. Temperatures should warm gradually through outlook period with
early frosts about the central and southern interior becoming less extensive on
Monday and becoming confined to the southeast interior on Tuesday morning.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
