Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 4/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A ridge of high pressure will persist through southern Queensland for the
next few days, producing a dry, stable airmass over most of the state, with no
significant cloud cover.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Fine and clear conditions through most of the state. Isolated light showers
about far northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Light winds in the
south, tending light to moderate S to SE over the tropics.
Forecast for Sunday
Fine conditions across most of the state, with just isolated light showers
about northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Another cold morning with
widespread early frosts over the central, southern and southeast districts.
Light winds, tending moderate S to SE over the northern tropics and far west.
Forecast for Monday
A weak high will move east into New South Wales, maintaining a broad ridge of
high pressure over southern Queensland and extending a dry and stable airmass
over most of the state. Isolated light showers will continue over the northeast
tropical coast north of Cooktown, with fine and sunny conditions elsewhere. Cool
to cold minimum temperatures and early frosts over the central, southern and
southeast interior.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high over New South Wales will move slowly northeast towards the southern
Coral Sea, maintaining a broad ridge of high pressure over southern Queensland.
The dry, stable air mass will persist with fine and sunny conditions continuing
apart from isolated light showers about the northeast tropical coast. Cool to
cold minimum temperatures and early frosts will again occur over the central,
southern and southeast interior.
Forecast for Wednesday
The weak high will reach the southern Coral Sea, with a ridge extending back
onto the tropical east coast of Queensland. A cold front will move eastwards
through South Australia and approach far southwestern Queensland by late
evening. Dry conditions will continue across the bulk of the state, with
temperatures increasing over the west as winds tend northwesterly ahead of the
approaching front. Isolated mainly light showers should continue about the
tropical east coast north of about Ingham. Another cool morning with early
frosts over the central and southeast inland. ,
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
A cold front is forecast to move through southern Queensland on Thursday,
producing a fresh and gusty southwesterly wind change, but no rainfall is
expected to accompany the change due to the dry airmass in place. At the same
time, isolated showers should contract northwards to the far northeast coast.
Daytime temperatures will rise to be above average over southern Queensland on
Thursday ahead of the wind change, but following the passage of the front, a
much colder airmass will become established over southern Queensland, with
temperatures falling to well below average on Friday. In fact, Friday is likely
to feel particularly cold over the southeast, especially in elevated terrain,
due to the cold air and strong gusty winds; there may even be sufficient
moisture in the southwesterly flow for a mix of drizzle and sleet over the
Granite Belt and far southern Darling Downs. These conditions should gradually
moderate on Saturday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
