MELBOURNE - Jul 30/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Great Australia Bight extends a ridge and an associated dry, cool SW to SE airstream over much of Queensland. The high will continue to dominate Queensland's weather as it moves slowly east and weakens over the next few days. A trough and an associated fresh S'ly wind change will move north along the southern Queensland coast late tonight and in the early hours of Tuesday. Forecast for the rest of Monday Isolated light showers about far northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait, also developing about Fraser Island and the exposed southern coast late tonight. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Light to moderate SW to SE winds, fresh at times along the north tropical coast and also freshening about the southern coast late tonight. Forecast for Tuesday Isolated light showers over far northern parts of the Peninsula district, also about the exposed east coast and islands. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A cold morning over much of the state with widespread early frosts over the central, southern and southeast inland. Light to moderate SW to SE winds, fresh and gusty at times along the east coast and through the west. Forecast for Wednesday The high will weaken as it moves east over New South Wales. A dry, stable SW to SE wind flow will extend from the high through Queensland. Fine and sunny conditions are expected across the state apart from isolated light showers near the northeast tropical coast. A powerful S'ly swell will affect exposed southern Queensland beaches. Minimum temperatures will remain well below average under the clear skies away from the northern tropics, with widespread early frosts through the interior. Forecast for Thursday The weakening high pressure system should drift over southern inland Queensland, with fine and sunny conditions again extending over the state apart from isolated light showers in a moist onshore SE'ly wind flow along the northeast tropical coast. The powerful S'ly swells over southern Queensland waters will decrease. Minimum temperatures will remain well below average under the clear skies away from the northern tropics, with widespread early frosts through the interior. Forecast for Friday A high pressure ridge will persist over southern Queensland and continue to circulate a dry, stable wind flow over much of the state. An upper level trough will generate some patchy cloud through the southern interior though with no rainfall expected due to the dry airmass. Isolated showers will continue in the onshore wind flow over the northeast tropical coast, with fine and sunny conditions elsewhere over the state. Minimum temperatures will remain below average, particularly through the southern, central and southeast inland where widespread early frosts are expected. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday A weak ridge of high pressure should remain in place over southern Queensland over the weekend, maintaining a dry and stable airmass through much of the state with only isolated showers on the northeast tropical coast. Extensive early frosts will continue through the southeast, central and southern interior. A trough will most likely move north from New South Wales into southeastern Queensland on Monday before contracting off the southern coast. Little precipitation is expected with this trough with just the chance of isolated showers about the southern border. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
