MELBOURNE - Jul 27/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters for Saturday morning. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for waters between Cape Melville and Innisfail, and for waters south of St Lawrence including Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay, for Saturday morning. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A surface trough lies near the east coast of Queensland and will move offshore south of Cairns this evening. An associated upper trough will move eastwards across the southern border of the state. A high over Western Australia will extend a strengthening ridge over central Queensland in the wake of the trough, with a dry and cooler airmass extending across most of the state. Forecast for the rest of Friday Isolated showers over eastern districts, clearing to the east during the afternoon. Isolated showers over the southwest. Fine elsewhere. Mostly moderate S to SW winds, tending S to SE in the far north. Forecast for Saturday Cloudy and cold conditions with some light showers or drizzle possible about far southern parts of Darling Downs. Isolated showers about northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Temperatures generally below average, particularly during the morning with early frost patches possible through the interior. Moderate to fresh SW to SE winds. Forecast for Sunday The high over the Great Australian Bight will move slowly east, maintaining the firm ridge over southern Queensland. The upper level pattern will remain benign, and this combined with the dry air over most of the state will lead to fine and mostly sunny conditions. Isolated showers will persist in an onshore wind flow through northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Areas of early frost about the central, southern and southeast interior. Forecast for Monday The high will remain slow moving over the Great Australian Bight, continuing to circulate dry and cool S to SE winds across most of the state. Isolated showers will persist about eastern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. An upper level trough will sweep over southeast Queensland, but the dry air and southerly wind flow will restrict its impact to the possibility of a shower or two about Fraser Island. Fine and mostly sunny conditions elsewhere. Early frost areas likely across the central, southern and southeast interior. Forecast for Tuesday The high will drift only slowly southeast towards Tasmania, with dry and stable conditions remaining in place over most of the state, although a shower or two may return to most exposed parts of the east coast. An upper level trough approaching the far southwest may produce some high cloud, but no rainfall is expected. Areas of early frost about the central, southern and southeast interior. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The high will begin to rapidly weaken, drifting northeast to lie over southeast Queensland by late Thursday. This will lead to a continuation of fine conditions across most of the state, with winds generally becoming light, and showers clearing from most of the east coast. Morning frosts to continue about the central, southern and southeast interior. Isolated showers along the north tropical coast and exposed parts of the east Queensland coast are likely in the S to SE air flow. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
