MELBOURNE - Jul 20/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Strong Wind Warning for coastal waters between Gladstone and Point Danger, including Moreton Bay and Hervey Bay. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1033 hPa] over South Australia will strengthen while remaining slow moving. The high extends a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A strong surface low over the central northern Tasman Sea will maintain its intensity as it slowly moves to the east-southeast. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Fine and mostly sunny, although quite cool, across most of the state. A few light frosts over the southern inland early morning. Only isolated showers near the southeast coast and over the far north. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds with strong S to SE winds off the southeast coast generating powerful surf about the eastern beaches of Fraser and Stradbroke Islands. Forecast for Sunday The high over South Australia will move slowly to the southeast towards Victoria, while the low over the Tasman Sea should remain slow moving. This will continue to maintain dry and settled weather over most of the state, with just isolated showers along parts of the tropical coast and the southeast coast. Strong winds are likely to continue along the southern coast. Forecast for Monday The high will remain slow moving over Victoria while gradually weakening, while the low over the Tasman Sea will maintain its intensity and remain slow moving. This will maintain the fine and relatively cool conditions across most of the state, with just isolated showers along parts of the east coast, although a weak trough in the southeasterly trade flow and gradually increasing moisture should lead to increasing showers about the North Tropical Coast. The strong winds off the southeast coast are likely to persist. Forecast for Tuesday The high is likely to move generally eastwards into the far east of the country whilst weakening and this will direct SE winds on the east coast of Queensland. Isolated showers are again likely about the exposed southeast coast and far northeast of the state. The remainder of the state should remain fine and mostly sunny. Early frosts are again likely over the southern and southeast interior. The strong winds off the southeast coast should ease very early in the day. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The pattern will begin to gradually change during the outlook period with the ridge along the east coast weakening, ahead of an upper level trough moving eastwards through central Australia, A new ridge will push across the west of the state on Friday from a new high developing over Western Australia. Generally, most of the state should remain fine and mostly sunny with only isolated showers about the east coast, although the upper trough may induce a weak band of cloud and at least some shower activity over the southern and southeast inland late next week. Rainfall accumulations are not likely to be large with this system. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Saturday.
