MELBOURNE - Jul 17/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coastal waters between Torres Strait and Cairns. Flood Warnings are current for the Connors and Isaac Rivers and the Don River. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1031 hPa] over the Tasman Sea is continuing to move slowly east. The high will extend a weakening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A weak upper trough will move through southern Queensland on Wednesday. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Isolated showers along the east coast, becoming scattered about the Central and Southeast Coast. Isolated showers through the southern tropics and eastern interior, tending to patchy rain through the central areas. Fine in the west. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds in the east, fresh to strong and gusty along the northern coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Wednesday Isolated showers along the east coast, becoming scattered about the North Tropical Coast, Central Coast and Southeast Coast. Morning drizzle and light rain through the central and southeast interior, with isolated showers during the afternoon and extending into the tropical interior. Isolated thunderstorms are possible over the far southern areas of the state. Fine in the west. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds in the east, light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Thursday A new high will develop across central Australia while the upper trough will move into the southeast. The surface trough will move eastwards and offshore thus allowing drier SW to SE winds to become established across most of the state. Showers and drizzle will occur before east of the trough, contracting off the southeast during the day. Isolated showers to persist over northern Cape York Peninsula. Forecast for Friday The high will remain over central Australia while the upper trough will move off the east coast. A low is expected to develop in the Tasman Sea, extending dry SW to SE winds across most of the state. Cool conditions over the interior with early frost areas in the south. Isolated showers along the northern east coast, and exposed parts off the southeast coast. Strong S to SE winds in the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria and about the southeast coast. Forecast for Saturday The high will move to the southeast as the low pressure system in the Tasman Sea remains slow moving while deepening. Dry SW to SE winds will continue through the state, with cool conditions and early frost areas over the southern and central interior. Isolated showers along the northeast coast and about exposed parts of the southeast coast. Strong S to SE winds in the southeast, northeast and southern Gulf of Carpentaria waters. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The high will move slowly to the southeast and extend a ridge across the state as the low in the Tasman Sea remains slow moving. Cool S to SE winds will persist across the state during the forecast period with early frosts about the southeast and southern inland. Fine and sunny in most areas. Isolated showers about the exposed southeast coast and in the northeast tropics. Strong S to SE winds to continue in the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria and about southeast and northern tropical coast.
