Weather Situation
A high [1029 hPa] over New South Wales will continue to move eastwards and
enter the Tasman Sea overnight and the New Zealand area by late Tuesday. The
high will maintain a firm ridge along the east coast of Queensland until Tuesday
when the ridge will begin to weaken.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Cloudy over the northern tropics with isolated showers about the east coast
and over northern Cape York Peninsula. Cloud developing over the southeast
during the day with isolated showers developing along the exposed coast during
the afternoon and evening. Fine and cool elsewhere with early frosts in the
central and southern interior as well as the southeast inland. Moderate to fresh
SW to SE winds, fresh to strong and gusty along the east coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high will move across the Tasman Sea and will maintain a ridge and SE
winds along the east coast of Queensland. Showers will occur along the east
coast in the moist SE winds, particularly about the central and southern coasts.
Showers will spread into the adjacent inland in the afternoon. Some morning
drizzle and isolated afternoon and evening showers will occur over the eastern
tropical interior and the central interior. With the high moving quickly
eastwards across the Tasman Sea the strong SE winds will contract to north of
about Cairns in the afternoon. A cool morning will occur over much of the
interior with frost areas about the southeast and southern interior.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will move to the east of New Zealand resulting the ridge weakening
along the east coast. So winds will shift more E'ly with the strong winds along
the northeast tropical coast easing very early. Showers will continue along the
east coast in the onshore stream and spread across the tropical, central and
southern interior with some morning drizzle areas. These showers may spread to
light rain areas over central and southern Queensland as an upper trough moves
into the southwest of the state late in the day. The upper trough will also
assist in increasing instability over the far southern interior and border
ranges with possible isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. A new
high will move into central Australia.
Forecast for Thursday
The new high will move a little further eastwards across central Australia
while the upper trough will move into the southeast. The surface trough will
move eastwards and offshore thus allowing drier SW to SE winds to become
established across most of the state. Showers and drizzle will occur before the
trough and then contract into the southeast corner in the afternoon. Isolated SE
trade showers will persist over northern Cape York Peninsula and through Torres
Strait. Strong S to SE winds will occur across southeast Gulf of Carpentaria
waters, and develop over far northern and southern waters during the day.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The high will move slowly to the south and extend a ridge across the state as
a deep low develops over the Tasman Sea. So cool S to SE winds will persist
across the state during the forecast period. As a result conditions will be fine
and sunny in most areas. Isolated showers will redevelop about the exposed east
coast areas as the onshore flow becomes moister. Early frosts about the
southeast and southern inland. Strong S to SE winds will continue over southeast
Gulf of Carpentaria waters during the period, as well as along parts of the east
coast.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
