Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jul 14/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for southeast Gulf of
Carpentaria waters.
A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coastal waters between Torres Strait
and Burnett Heads.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A surface trough is moving east off the tropical coast of Queensland this
morning. A high [1026 hPa] over Western Australia is expected to move eastwards
and strengthen the ridge along the east coast of Queensland during today. An
upper trough will move across southern Queensland during today, and contract the
cloud and rain band into the northern and eastern tropics by late tonight.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Fine and a mostly sunny day over the southwest. Cloudy with patchy rain and
showers elsewhere, contracting to the northern and eastern tropics by late
tonight and easing. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula.
Cool across the state with moderate to fresh and gusty SW to SE winds, strong at
times along the east coast north of about Seventeen Seventy and over south-east
Gulf of Carpentaria waters.
Forecast for Monday
The upper trough will move seawards early with the cloud and patchy rain band
over the north-east tropics contracting offshore during the morning. In the wake
of the cloud and rain band isolated showers will persist along the east coast
north of the Cardwell to Cairns area. Fine and cool conditions will occur
elsewhere with widespread frost over the south-east, southern and central
interior. The high pressure system will move into northeast New South Wales
during the day and will extend a firm ridge along the east coast. Strong winds
will occur north of Fraser Island along the east coast and will again occur
about south-east Gulf of Carpentaria waters in the morning. Isolated showers
will develop about the Fraser Island area in the evening.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high will move across the Tasman Sea and will maintain a firm ridge and
SE winds along the east coast of Queensland. Isolated showers will occur along
the east coast in the moist SE winds and will spread into the adjacent inland in
the afternoon. With the high moving quickly eastwards across the Tasman Sea the
strong SE winds will contract to north of Bowen by the evening. A cool to cold
morning will occur over much of the interior with frost areas about the
south-east and southern interior.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will move to east of New Zealand resulting the ridge weakening along
the east coast. So winds will shift more E'ly with the strong winds along the
north-east tropical coast easing very early. Showers will continue along the
east coast in the onshore stream and will again develop over the inland in the
afternoon in the increasingly moist conditions. Some morning drizzle areas may
occur about the eastern interior in these moist conditions. Cloudy with
scattered showers over southeast districts as a weak upper trough affects the
area. A frontal system will move across the west of the state during the morning
and will help trigger isolated storms in the afternoon over the southern
interior as some upper instability comes into consideration. A new high will
move into central Australia.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The high will move only very slowly eastwards as a low develops and deepens
over the Tasman Sea. So dry SW to SE winds will circulate across most of the
state well into the weekend. The frontal system will move eastwards across
southern Queensland during Thursday with showers and thunderstorms occurring
before drying SW winds become established. However, some drizzle areas may occur
into Friday morning about the southern slopes of the Darling Downs as moisture
circulating about the Tasman Sea low penetrates into the area. Isolated showers
will persist into the weekend about northern Cape york Peninsula and through
Torres Strait in the moister trade flow. Strong S to SE winds will occur over
south-east Gulf of Carpentaria waters from Thursday morning onwards.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Sunday.
