MELBOURNE - Jul 13/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure system east of New Zealand extends a ridge across the Coral Sea and a very humid SE to NE airflow over eastern Queensland. A surface trough over the southern Queensland interior is expected to move eastwards and be located over the eastern tropics by Saturday night. A major upper trough approaching central Australia is expected to move very slowly eastwards during the weekend. Forecast for the rest of Friday Mostly cloudy with showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over most of the state, though remaining fine over the far northwest. Moderate falls likely over the southern interior and southeast, locally heavy near the southern border overnight. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds, shifting NE to NW over the south ahead of a moderate S to SW change moving across the west and southern interior. Forecast for Saturday Mostly cloudy with showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over most of the state. Moderate to locally heavy falls over the eastern tropics, and also about parts of the southeast during the morning. Rain clearing from the southwest during the day with cooler conditions developing. Morning fog areas over parts of central and southern Queensland. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds over the northern tropics. Moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere, shifting SW to SE over western and southern Queensland. Forecast for Sunday The upper level trough will move eastwards across the state, approaching the southern coast late in the day. This will continue to maintain cloud and rain areas over most central and eastern parts of the state, with some moderate falls possible about the southeast tropics and parts of the central districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula. Fine and colder conditions should spread across southern and western Queensland with drier moderate SW to SE winds. Strong SE winds are expected to develop about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria during the morning and about the east coast north of St Lawrence as a high moves over northern New South Wales. Forecast for Monday The upper trough is expected to move east and off the southern and central Queensland coasts during the day, with the cloud and now patchy rain band contracting to the northeast tropics and clearing. The high pressure system should move east into northeast New South Wales, and is expected to maintain strong SE winds about the east coast north of about Sandy Cape and fresh SE winds over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria in the morning. Southern and western parts of the state should be fine and mostly sunny. A cool morning is expected over the central, southern and southeast interior with early frost areas. Forecast for Tuesday The high is expected to move into the Tasman Sea with the firm ridge and SE winds persisting along the east Queensland coast. Isolated showers are expected to occur in the onshore airstream along the east Queensland coast, spreading into the eastern interior during the day. Scattered showers about the North Tropical Coast. A cool morning over the interior with early frost areas in the southern and southeast interior. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The ridge along the east Queensland coast is expected to weaken, but will still produce isolated showers over most of Queensland ahead of another surface and upper trough system moving into and across the state from late Wednesday. The trough system is likely to be accompanied by a band of rain and isolated thunderstorms, which will form over the central and southern interior during Wednesday and move east towards the central and southern coasts during Thursday and Friday. A new ridge will develop in the wake of the trough, with fine and cool conditions returning to most of the interior by late in the week. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
