Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jul 13/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high pressure system east of New Zealand extends a ridge across the Coral
Sea and a very humid SE to NE airflow over eastern Queensland. A surface trough
over the southern Queensland interior is expected to move eastwards and be
located over the eastern tropics by Saturday night. A major upper trough
approaching central Australia is expected to move very slowly eastwards during
the weekend.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Mostly cloudy with showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over most
of the state, though remaining fine over the far northwest. Moderate falls
likely over the southern interior and southeast, locally heavy near the southern
border overnight. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds, shifting NE to NW over the
south ahead of a moderate S to SW change moving across the west and southern
interior.
Forecast for Saturday
Mostly cloudy with showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over most
of the state. Moderate to locally heavy falls over the eastern tropics, and also
about parts of the southeast during the morning. Rain clearing from the
southwest during the day with cooler conditions developing. Morning fog areas
over parts of central and southern Queensland. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds
over the northern tropics. Moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere, shifting SW to SE
over western and southern Queensland.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper level trough will move eastwards across the state, approaching the
southern coast late in the day. This will continue to maintain cloud and rain
areas over most central and eastern parts of the state, with some moderate falls
possible about the southeast tropics and parts of the central districts.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula. Fine and
colder conditions should spread across southern and western Queensland with
drier moderate SW to SE winds. Strong SE winds are expected to develop about the
southern Gulf of Carpentaria during the morning and about the east coast north
of St Lawrence as a high moves over northern New South Wales.
Forecast for Monday
The upper trough is expected to move east and off the southern and central
Queensland coasts during the day, with the cloud and now patchy rain band
contracting to the northeast tropics and clearing. The high pressure system
should move east into northeast New South Wales, and is expected to maintain
strong SE winds about the east coast north of about Sandy Cape and fresh SE
winds over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria in the morning. Southern and western
parts of the state should be fine and mostly sunny. A cool morning is expected
over the central, southern and southeast interior with early frost areas.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high is expected to move into the Tasman Sea with the firm ridge and SE
winds persisting along the east Queensland coast. Isolated showers are expected
to occur in the onshore airstream along the east Queensland coast, spreading
into the eastern interior during the day. Scattered showers about the North
Tropical Coast. A cool morning over the interior with early frost areas in the
southern and southeast interior.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The ridge along the east Queensland coast is expected to weaken, but will
still produce isolated showers over most of Queensland ahead of another surface
and upper trough system moving into and across the state from late Wednesday.
The trough system is likely to be accompanied by a band of rain and isolated
thunderstorms, which will form over the central and southern interior during
Wednesday and move east towards the central and southern coasts during Thursday
and Friday. A new ridge will develop in the wake of the trough, with fine and
cool conditions returning to most of the interior by late in the week.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
