Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jul 9/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coastal waters
between Torres Strait and Bowen.

Weather Situation
A high pressure system [1033 hPa] over the Tasman Sea will continue to move
slowly eastwards during the next couple of days. The high extending a firm ridge
along the east coast of Queensland. An upper trough over the far west is
expected to move eastwards across the southwest of the state during today, and
slide away to the southeast in a weakening mode on Tuesday. A second major upper
level trough will affect much of the southern half of the state later in the
week.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Rain areas, showers and scattered thunderstorms over most of the interior and
southern tropics. Some moderate to locally heavy falls developing about the
central and eastern tropical interior this evening. Isolated showers over
remaining areas. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds over most parts tending strong
at times along the east tropical coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
Cloudy conditions with rain areas and isolated storms over the southern
tropics, with some moderate to locally heavy falls. Patchy rain areas and
isolated thunderstorms over the southeast interior, weakening late in the day.
Showers will occur over most remaining eastern and central areas of the state.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the west. Moderate to locally
fresh SE to NE winds in most areas.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high pressure system will move across New Zealand but maintain a ridge
onto the east tropical coast of Queensland. Showers will continue along the east
coast and also occur in most remaining areas of the state in the relatively
moist SE to NE airflow. These showers will become scattered about the north
tropical coast and also over the west of the state in the afternoon. Isolated
storms will develop over the west of the state in the afternoon.
Forecast for Thursday
A new strong upper trough system will develop and move across central
Australia. This will generate a new cloud and rain band over southern inland and
western areas of the state during the day. Some moderate falls are likely with
this rain band as will isolated storms. Showers will occur over most remaining
areas of the state in the moist SE to NE airflow. A surface trough will move
into the southwest late in the day, heralding the onset of drier and cooler SW
to S winds.
Forecast for Friday
The upper level trough will move east, with the band of rain areas and
isolated thunderstorms also moving eastwards through southern parts of the state
into the southeast corner during the day, producing some moderate falls. Mostly
isolated showers should continue over the eastern tropics. The surface trough
will move east through the southwest, leading to fine and cooler conditions
becoming established.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The upper trough system and associated cloud and rain band will continue to
progress eastwards and move off the southern and central coasts of Queensland
during Saturday. The surface trough will also move off the coast Saturday
morning with drier SW to SE winds spreading across most of the state in its
wake. Fine, mostly sunny and cooler conditions will then prevail in most areas
for the remainder of the period. Isolated showers will persist about northern
Cape York Peninsula in the relatively moist SE trade flow.
