Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jul 8/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for far northern areas of
the northeast Gulf of Carpentaria.
A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coastal waters between Torres Strait
and St Lawrence.

Weather Situation
A high pressure system [1033 hPa] over the Tasman Sea will continue to move
slowly eastwards during the next couple of days. The high is extending a firm
ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A new upper trough is expected to move
across the southwest of the state during Monday and Tuesday while a more major
system will affect the state late in the week.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Mostly cloudy with isolated showers in eastern parts, tending scattered about
the North Tropical Coast and ranges. Mostly cloudy over the western parts of the
state with isolated light showers. Fine though partly cloudy elsewhere. Moderate
to locally fresh SE to NE winds, tending strong and gusty along the east coast
north of Burnett Heads. Early frost possible about the Granite Belt region.
Forecast for Monday
Mostly cloudy with isolated showers about the east coast, tending scattered
with areas of rain about the southern tropics. Cloudy conditions in the west
with patchy rain, showers and afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Isolated
showers in most other areas, mostly in the afternoon. Moderate to fresh SE to NE
winds over most parts tending to strong at times along the east tropical
coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high will reach the New Zealand area while the upper trough will tilt
across south-west Queensland and New South Wales. Showers will continue along
the east coast and the adjacent inland. Cloudy conditions with patchy rain,
showers and storms generated by the upper trough will continue over the
south-west, southeast and southern inland. Elsewhere over the state, cloudy
conditions will  persist with showers and patchy rain in most areas. Moderate to
locally fresh SE to NE winds tending strong at times along the east tropical
coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high pressure system will move to the east of New Zealand but maintain a
ridge onto the east tropical coast of Queensland. Showers will continue along
the east coast and adjacent inland, tending more scattered about the North
Tropical Coast and southern coast. Cloudy conditions will continue over the west
and south-west with showers and isolated thunderstorms tending to patchy rain at
times mainly late in the day. Moderate to locally fresh SE to NE winds, strong
at times along the east tropical coast north of Cairns.
Forecast for Thursday
The high pressure system will move further east of New Zealand but maintain a
weakening ridge onto the east tropical coast of Queensland. Showers will
continue in eastern parts of the state, tending more scattered about the North
Tropical Coast and southern coast. Cloudy conditions will continue over the west
and south-west with a band of rain and thunderstorms moving towards the
southeast interior late in the day. Some moderate falls may occur with this
system. Moderate to locally fresh SE to NE winds, strong at times along the east
tropical coast north of Cairns.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The high pressure system will continue moving further east away from New
Zealand as the next high pushes through southern Australia. A ridge will
therefore remain along the north-east tropical coast of Queensland. Showers will
continue along most of the east coast and across the eastern tropical interior.
The upper trough will move through southeastern Australia and then off the coast
by Saturday, with a cloud and rain band pushing eastwards with it. Some moderate
falls of rain will most likely occur with the system. In the wake of the cloud
and rain band cooler and drier southerly winds will spread across the state. In
the far north of the state, southeast trade winds will continue to direct
isolated showers across Cape York Peninsula.
