For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A strong high pressure system [1037 hPa] near western Victoria is expected to move slowly eastwards during the next couple of days. The high is extending a firm ridge across Queensland with S to SE winds, strong along the coast. An upper trough is expected to move over southeast Queensland during Friday. Forecast for the rest of Friday Mostly cloudy with isolated showers along the coast, tending scattered along the southern coast and border ranges. Isolated showers over northern Cape York Peninsula. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A cool to cold morning in most parts with widespread frosts over central and southern Queensland and parts of the tropical interior including the Tablelands to the west of Cairns. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds, tending strong and gusty along the east coast and near the southern Gulf of Carpentaria in the morning. Forecast for Saturday The high pressure system will move slightly further east into eastern Victoria and maintain a fresh to strong southeasterly flow along the east Queensland coast. This will lead to isolated showers about most of the eastern coastal districts, with scattered showers about the North Tropical Coast and ranges. Scattered showers are also likely along the southern Queensland coast with some local thunder possible as the upper level trough moves offshore during the day. Showers spreading into the adjacent inland during the day. Fine though partly cloudy about the remainder of the state. Moderate to locally fresh E to SE winds. SE winds tending strong and gusty along the east coast north of about Burnett Heads. A cool to cold morning in most parts with early frosts over central and southern inland Queensland. Forecast for Sunday The high pressure system will move into the Tasman Sea and maintain a fresh to strong southeast flow along the east Queensland coast. This will lead to isolated showers about most of the eastern coastal districts, with more frequent showers about the North Tropical Coast and ranges. Morning drizzle about the central interior. Showers are likely to spread into the eastern interior in the afternoon. Fine though partly cloudy about the remainder of the state. Moderate to locally fresh SE to NE winds. SE winds tending strong and gusty along the east coast north of about Burnett Heads. Early frosts confined to the southern and southeast interior. Forecast for Monday The high pressure system is expected to move eastwards across the Tasman Sea with a moist east to southeast flow onto the east Queensland coast. This will produce isolated showers, spreading into the eastern interior during the day. Frequent showers tending to rain at times about the North Tropical Coast and ranges with moderate falls. Morning drizzle areas are again likely about parts of the tropical and central interior. A weak surface trough is likely to develop near the western border, and combined with an upper trough to the west is likely to generate showers and afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the west of the state. In addition, middle level cloud is likely to increase over the tropical interior with some patchy rain developing. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The high pressure system is expected to move to the east of New Zealand during the outlook period and extend a weakening ridge with moist east to southeast winds along the east Queensland coast. This will continue to produce showers along the east coast, more frequent about the tropical coast and tending to rain about the North Tropical Coast with moderate falls. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to occur over the west and southern interior adjacent to the slow moving surface trough over southwest Queensland; increasing to areas of rain and storms during Wednesday or Thursday as another upper trough over central and South Australia intensifies. Elsewhere over the interior, moisture and cloud will produce isolated to scattered showers. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Friday.
