Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jul 4/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for Southeast Gulf of
Carpentaria waters.
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait to
Cardwell and between Sandy Cape and Point Danger.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A strong high pressure system [1034 hPa] over the eastern Great Australian
Bight is expected to move slowly eastwards during the next couple of days and
strengthen. This high will extend a firm ridge across most of Queensland. An
upper trough over southeast Australia is expected to approach southern
Queensland during Thursday.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Isolated showers along the northeast tropical coast and over northern Cape
York Peninsula. Isolated thunderstorms possible over Torres Strait. Isolated
showers developing about Fraser Island late evening. Fine and mostly clear
conditions across the rest of the state. Fresh to strong and gusty S to SE winds
along the north tropical coast. Moderate SE to SW winds, fresh at times in the
west.
Forecast for Thursday
Isolated showers along exposed parts of the east coast and islands, and over
northern Cape York Peninsula. Isolated thunderstorms possible over Torres
Strait. Chance of isolated afternoon showers along the southern border ranges.
Fine, cool and mostly sunny conditions over the remainder of the state. A cold
morning over most of the state, with widespread early frosts over most of the
interior and possibly on the Atherton Tablelands. Fresh to strong and gusty S to
SE winds along the north tropical coast and along the exposed southern coast.
Moderate to fresh S to SE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Friday
The high pressure system will remain slow moving over southeast Australia
with an increasingly moist flow about the east coast that is likely to lead to
isolated showers along most of the east coast. An upper trough will move through
the southeast of the state leading to increasing showers south of Fraser Island,
although the southerly flow should keep this activity confined to the exposed
coast and islands. Isolated afternoon showers may occur about the southern
border ranges. Isolated showers will continue over northern Cape York Peninsula
with possible thunderstorms over Torres Strait. Strong S to SE winds will
continue about the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria in the morning and along the
entire length of the east coast. A cool to cold morning in most parts with
widespread frosts over central and southern Queensland and possibly on the
Atherton Tablelands to the west of Cairns.
Forecast for Saturday
The high pressure system will move slightly further east into eastern
Victoria and maintain a fresh to strong southeasterly flow along the east coast.
This will lead to isolated showers about most of the eastern coastal districts,
with more frequent showers about the North Tropical Coast. Showers are also
likely to increase about exposed parts of the southern coast, with some local
thunder possible, and spread a little further inland during the day. Fine and
mostly sunny about the remainder of the state. Strong S to SE winds will
continue about the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria and about the east coast north
of Burnett Heads. A cool to cold morning in most parts with widespread frosts
over central and southern Queensland.
Forecast for Sunday
The high pressure system will move into the Tasman Sea and maintain a fresh
to strong southeasterly flow along the east coast. This will lead to isolated
showers about most of the eastern coastal districts, with more frequent showers
about the North Tropical Coast. Morning drizzle about the central interior.
Showers are likely to spread into the eastern interior in the afternoon. Fine
though partly cloudy about the remainder of the state. Strong S to SE winds will
continue about the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria and about the east coast north
of about Burnett Heads. Early frosts confined to the southern and southeast
interior.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The high will move slowly east across the Tasman Sea during the forecast
period. The high will continue to direct moist SE winds and isolated showers
onto the east coast, with more frequent showers about the North Tropical Coast.
A weak surface trough is likely to develop over the southwest of the state on
Monday and remain slow moving on Tuesday and will act as the focus for showers
and possible thunderstorms. Elsewhere over the interior, moisture and cloud will
increase with the risk of isolated showers, mainly in the afternoons. Frosts
should become confined to the Granite Belt through the outlook period. A more
significant surface and upper trough system may move into the southwest of the
state during Wednesday accompanied by a band of rain and thunderstorms.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
