MELBOURNE - Jul 3/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Strong Wind Warning for Southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters. Strong Wind Warning for coastal waters Torres Strait to Innisfail, extending south to Cardwell during Wednesday evening. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A strong high pressure system over South Australia will strengthen during the next couple of days and move slowly eastwards. This high will extend a firm ridge across most of Queensland until late in the week. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Isolated showers about the east coast north of Cooktown and northern Cape York Peninsula, with possible thunderstorms through Torres Strait in the evening. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Moderate SE to SW winds, fresh at times in the west and also about the east coast north of Bowen. Forecast for Wednesday Isolated light showers about Fraser Island and the far northeast tropics, with a thunderstorm or two possible over Torres Strait. A fine, cool and mostly sunny day elsewhere. A cool to cold morning in most parts with widespread frosts over central and southern Queensland and possibly on the Atherton Tablelands. Moderate SE to SW winds, fresh at times in the west and also about the east coast north of Bowen. Forecast for Thursday The large high will move east into Victoria and continue to strengthen slightly, with a firm ridge remaining in place over most of Queensland. Fine and clear conditions will remain over most of the state under the influence of the dry, cool and stable airmass. However, the S to SE flow onto the east coast will gradually gain in moisture and produce isolated showers along exposed parts of the east coast and islands with the assistance of an upper level trough. Isolated showers will continue over northern Cape York Peninsula with possible thunderstorms over Torres Strait. Strong S to SE winds will continue about the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria and about the east coast north of Cardwell. A cool to cold morning in most parts with widespread frosts over central and southern Queensland and possibly on the Atherton Tablelands to the west of Cairns. Forecast for Friday The high pressure will remain over southeast Australia with an increasingly moist flow about the east coast that may lead to one or two showers about exposed parts of the east coast. An upper trough will move through the southeast of the state leading to increasing showers south of Fraser Island, although the southerly flow should keep this activity confined to the exposed coast and islands. Isolated showers will continue about the far northeast of the state with possible thunderstorms in Torres Strait. Strong S to SE winds will continue about the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria and about the east coast north of Bowen. A cool to cold morning in most parts with widespread frosts over central and southern Queensland and possibly on the Atherton Tablelands to the west of Cairns. Forecast for Saturday The high pressure system will move slightly further east into eastern Victoria and maintain a fresh to strong southeasterly flow along the east coast. This will lead to isolated showers about most of the eastern coastal districts, with more frequent showers about the North Tropical Coast and exposed parts of the southern coast. Fine and mostly sunny about the remainder of the state. Strong S to SE winds will continue about the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria and about the east coast north of Burnett Heads. A cool to cold morning in most parts with widespread frosts over central and southern Queensland. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The high will move east across the Tasman Sea during the forecast period. The high will continue to direct moist SE winds and isolated showers onto the east coast, with more frequent showers about the North Tropical Coast. A weak surface trough is likely to move into the southwest of the state on Monday and remain slow moving on Tuesday and will act as the focus for showers and possible thunderstorms. Elsewhere over the interior, moisture and cloud will increase with the risk of isolated showers. Frosts should become confined to the Granite Belt through the outlook period. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Wednesday. Weather & Warnings Australia New South Wales Victoria Queensland Warnings Summary Forecasts Brisbane Forecast Qld.
