Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 29/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1023 hPa] over the Tasman Sea will continue to move slowly eastwards.
A low [1003 hPa] over the southwest Coral Sea is expected to continue moving
southeast away from the coast during today. A new high will move into the west
of the continent on Saturday and extend a firm ridge across most of the state
well into next week.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers over southeast districts and about parts of the northeast
tropics. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate SW to SE winds. Powerful surf
conditions about the southeast coast.
Forecast for Saturday
Fine and dry in most areas. Isolated showers about the northeast tropics.
Early fog areas in parts of eastern Queensland, with early frost about the
southern interior. Light to moderate SW to SE winds.
Forecast for Sunday
A new high will move into South Australia and continue to circulate dry SW to
SE winds across most of the state. These winds will be strong about the
southeast Gulf of Carpentaria and become strong along the east coast north of
Cooktown during the afternoon. Winds north of about Cairns will remain
relatively moist and may produce isolated showers about the coast. Due to the
dry conditions frosts will be widespread about the southeast and central and
southern interior. Temperatures will be below average across most of the state.
Forecast for Monday
A firm ridge from the high will persist across the state and will continue to
circulate dry SW to SE winds across most areas. The dry air will spread well
northwards, into the northern tropics. Cool to cold mornings will occur in most
parts with widespread frosts over central and southern Queensland. Some frost
may even occur on the Atherton Tableland to the west of Cairns. With the dry air
pushing northwards any stream showers will contract to north of Cooktown.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high will remain near stationary, extending the firm ridge through
Queensland. Dry SW to SE winds will continue across most areas, extending into
the northern tropics. Cool to cold mornings will occur in most parts with
widespread frosts over central and southern Queensland, possibly extending into
the Atherton Tableland to the west of Cairns. Isolated stream showers are
expected north of about Cooktown.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The high will move only slowly eastwards during the forecast period and
direct mostly dry S to SE winds across the state. So conditions will continue
fine in most areas. Isolated showers will continue about far northern Cape York
Peninsula and through Torres Strait where the SE trade winds will be relatively
moist. But the flow onto the east coast will tend more onshore and this will
allow showers to gradually spread southwards and occur in most east coast
districts on Thursday. Frosts will be widespread over much of the interior and
inland coastal districts. Temperatures generally will remain below average
across most of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
