MELBOURNE - Jun 28/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time

people in coastal parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast forecast
districts.
A Gale and Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Sandy Cape
and Point Danger, including Moreton Bay.

Weather Situation
A high [1028 hPa] over the Tasman Sea will continue to move slowly eastwards
and gradually weaken. A low [1008 hPa] on a surface trough east of Fraser Island
is expected to deepen further while moving to the southeast away from the
coast. A new high will move into the west of the continent on Saturday and
extend a firm ridge across most of the state well into next week.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Cloudy with very patchy rain and showers about the south-east corner of the
state. Generally fine elsewhere over the state apart from isolated showers about
the far north-east tropical coast and some possible drizzle over the over the
southeast, southern and central interior. Moderate SW to SE winds most parts
tending to strong and gusty about the coast south from Fraser Island. Dangerous
surf along the far southern coast between Sandy Cape to Point Danger.
Forecast for Friday
The high will reach the New Zealand area while the surface low and trough
will continue to move to the south-east away from the coast. So winds along the
far southern coast will continue to ease while a few showers will continue along
the exposed far southern coast in the S'ly airflow, mainly during the morning.
Isolated showers will continue over the far north-east tropical coast. A new
surface front will move rapidly eastwards across inland Queensland during the
day in a weakening mode. As a result drier S to SW winds will develop over most
of the interior.
Forecast for Saturday
A new ridge will extend across the state from a high over southern Western
Australia. So dry SW to SE winds will circulate across most of the state with
fine weather in most areas. Conditions will remain partly cloudy over eastern
Queensland due to residual moisture from the rain. A weak ridge along the far
north tropical coast will direct relatively moist SE winds and isolated showers
onto the coast north of about Cardwell. Minimum temperatures are expected to
decrease to below average in the tropics and most of the interior, with day time
temperatures returning to about average in most areas. Early frosts are a
possibility about parts of the southeast interior but are highly dependent on
the extent of cloud cover.
Forecast for Sunday
The new high will move into South Australia and continue to circulate dry SW
to SE winds across most of the state. These winds will be strong about the
south-east Gulf of Carpentaria and become strong along the east coast north of
Cairns during the afternoon. These winds north of about Cairns will remain
relatively moist and may produce isolated showers about the coast. Due to the
dry conditions frosts will be widespread about the south-east and central and
southern interior. Temperatures will be below average across most of the state.
Forecast for Monday
A firm ridge from the high will persist across the state and will continue to
circulate dry SW to SE winds across most areas. The dry air will spread well
northwards, into the northern tropics. Cool to cold mornings will occur in most
parts with widespread frosts over central and southern Queensland. Some frost
may even occur on the Atherton Tableland to the west of Cairns. With the dry air
pushing northwards any stream showers will contract to north of Cooktown.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The high will move only slowly eastwards during the forecast period and
direct mostly dry S to SE winds across the state. So conditions will continue
fine in most areas. Isolated showers will continue about far northern Cape York
Peninsula and through Torres Strait where the SE trade winds will be relatively
moist. However, from Wednesday onwards, the flow onto the east coast will tend
more onshore and this will allow showers to gradually spread southwards and
occur in most east coast districts on Thursday. Frosts will be widespread over
much of the interior and inland coastal districts. Temperatures generally will
remain below average across most of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
