Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 27/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Gale and Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters
between St Lawrence and Point Danger, including Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay.

Weather Situation
A high [1033 hPa] over eastern Victoria and the western Tasman Sea will
continue to move eastwards and slowly weaken over the next few days. A middle
level trough is moving across southern Queensland, generating thick cloud and
rain areas over the south-east of the state. This trough will move off the coast
during Thursday. A  surface trough located off the central and southern coast of
Queensland is expected to deepen with a low pressure system likely to form east
of Fraser Island early Thursday. The low is then expected to track to the
south-east from Friday onwards.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Cloudy with areas of rain over the south-east corner of the state. Some
showers and/or drizzle areas persisting over the south-east, southern and
central interior and also the south-east tropics. Isolated showers over the far
northeast tropics. Fine in the far west. Moderate S to SE winds, fresh to strong
and gusty at times along the southern Queensland coast.
Forecast for Thursday
The middle trough over southeast Queensland will move off the coast during
the day as the high moves further eastwards across the Tasman Sea and continues
to weaken. The low and surface trough off the southern Queensland coast will
begin to move to the south-east. As a result, strong and gusty S to SE winds
will persist along the coast south from Fraser Island and in offshore waters to
the immediate north. The cloud and rain areas over the south-east will contract
into the far southeast corner of the state during the day where it will remain
cool to cold. Some moderate falls of rain are possible about exposed coastal
parts south of about the Sunshine coast. Isolated showers and/or drizzle areas
are expected to persist over the remainder of eastern Queensland and the
northern tropics. Fine conditions will continue in the west.
Forecast for Friday
The high will reach the New Zealand area while the surface low and trough
will continue to move to the south-east. So winds along the far southern coast
will continue to ease while a few showers will continue along the exposed far
southern coast during the morning in the S'ly airflow.  A new surface front will
move rapidly eastwards across inland Queensland during the day in a weakening
mode. As a result drier S to SW winds will develop over most of the interior.
Very isolated showers may occur over southeast districts in the afternoon before
the weakening front.
Forecast for Saturday
A new ridge will extend across the state from a high over southern Western
Australia. So dry SW to SE winds will circulate across most of the state with
fine conditions in most areas. Conditions will remain partly cloudy over eastern
Queensland due to residual moisture from the rain. A weak ridge along the far
north tropical coast will direct relatively moist SE winds and isolated showers
onto the coast. Minimum temperatures are expected to decrease to below average
in the tropics and most of the interior, with day time temperatures returning to
about average in most areas. Early frosts are a possibility about parts of the
southeast interior but are highly dependent on the extent of cloud cover.
Forecast for Sunday
The new high will move into South Australia and continue to circulate dry SW
to SE winds across most of the state. These winds will be strong during the
morning about the south-east Gulf of Carpentaria and become strong along the
east coast during the day north of about Cairns. These winds north of about
Cairns will remain relatively moist and may produce an isolated shower about the
coast. Due to the dry conditions frosts will be widespread about the south-east
and central and southern interior. Temperatures will be below average across
most of the state.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The high will continue to move slowly eastwards during the forecast period
and direct mostly dry SW to SE winds across the state. So conditions will
continue fine in most areas. Isolated showers may continue about far northern
Cape York Peninsula and through Torres Strait where the SE trade winds will be
relatively moist. Frosts will be widespread over the central and southern
interior and the south-east of the state. Temperatures generally will remain
below average across most of the state.
