Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 26/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between
St Lawrence and Point Danger, including Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1034 hPa] over the eastern Great Australian Bight extends a ridge
across southeast Australia. The high is expected to move slowly eastwards into
Victoria during today while an upper level trough will move across southern
Queensland. A surface trough located off the Queensland coast, over the western
Coral Sea, is expected to deepen during the next couple of days.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Cloudy over the southern tropics, central and southeast districts and the
southern interior with showers, drizzle and increasing rain areas. Some moderate
falls over the Central Highlands south of about Clermont, northeast Warrego and
Maranoa, northern Darling Downs, and parts of the Wide Bay, Burnett and
Southeast Coast districts. Isolated showers and drizzle areas over the remainder
of the eastern tropics, with scattered showers about the North Tropical Coast.
Remaining fine in the far west. Cool to cold over much of the state,
particularly during the day under thick cloud. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds,
fresh to strong and gusty at times along the Capricornia and Wide Bay region.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high pressure system moves into the Tasman Sea late in the day and
weakens a little, while the upper level trough enters southeast Queensland. The
surface trough off the Capricornia coast deepens, with a low most likely forming
offshore late in the day. Cloudy with areas of rain and moderate falls
contracting into southeast districts. Isolated showers and extensive drizzle
areas persisting over the southern and central interior as well as over the
southeast tropics. Isolated showers over the northeast tropics, tending
scattered about the North Tropical Coast in the morning. Fine in the far west.
Remaining cool to cold during the day in central and southeast districts due to
the thick cloud cover. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds, fresh to strong and
gusty at times along the Capricornia and southern Queensland coasts as the
trough offshore deepens.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper trough moves off the southeast Queensland coast. The high moves
further east across the Tasman Sea and continues to weaken, but will still
extend a ridge along the east Queensland coast. The surface trough off the
Capricornia and southern Queensland coasts begins to move east, while the low on
the trough moves southeast to be located east of Fraser Island by night. As a
result, strong and gusty S to SE winds persist along the Capricornia and
southern Queensland coast. The thick cloud and rain areas contract to the far
southeast of the state where it will remain cool to cold during the day.
Isolated showers and morning drizzle areas persisting over the remainder of
eastern Queensland and the northern tropics. Fine in the west.
Forecast for Friday
The high moves to near New Zealand and is expected to extend a weaker ridge
along the north tropical coast with isolated showers over the northeast tropics.
A new surface trough and very weak upper trough is expected to moves rapidly
east across Queensland during the day, with drier S to SW winds developing over
most of the interior. A warmer day in the west and south ahead of the trough.
Isolated showers over southeast districts ahead of the trough, tending scattered
along the far southern coast during the early morning. The trough and low well
off the southeast Queensland coast are expected to continue moving away from the
region with winds decreasing.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
A new ridge will extend across the state from Saturday with drier and cooler
SW to SE winds over most areas. A weak ridge along the north tropical coast may
result in isolated showers over the northeast tropics. A surface trough passing
over southern Queensland during Sunday may result in isolated afternoon showers
over the southern interior before fine and mostly sunny conditions return on
Monday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
