MELBOURNE - Jun 25/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning for coastal waters between Torres Strait and Cardwell has been cancelled. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for coastal waters between St Lawrence and Double Island Point, including Hervey Bay for Tuesday. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1034 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge across New South Wales and along the east Queensland coast. The high is expected to move slowly east over Victoria on Tuesday while an upper level trough will move across southern Queensland with increasing rain areas over central and southern Queensland. A surface trough located off the Queensland coast, over the western Coral Sea, is expected to deepen during the next couple of days. Forecast for the rest of Monday Cloudy over the southern tropics, central and southeast districts, and parts of the southern interior with showers, patchy rain and drizzle areas. Isolated showers over the northeast tropics, increasing to scattered showers about the North Tropical Coast during the evening. Remaining fine in the far west. Cool to cold over much of the state, particularly during the day under thick cloud. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds, fresh and gusty at times along the Capricornia coast. Forecast for Tuesday Cloudy over the southern tropics, central and southeast districts and the southern interior with showers, drizzle and increasing rain areas. Some moderate falls developing late in the day over the Central Highlands south of Clermont, northern Darling Downs and western Wide Bay and Burnett district. Isolated showers and drizzle areas over the remainder of the eastern tropics, with scattered showers about the North Tropical Coast. Remaining fine in the far west. Cool to cold over much of the state, particularly during the day under thick cloud. Early frosts about the far southern and southeast interior. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds, fresh to strong and gusty at times along the Capricornia and Wide Bay region. Forecast for Wednesday The high pressure system moves into the Tasman Sea late in the day and weakens a little, while the upper level trough enters southeast Queensland. The surface trough off the Capricornia coast deepens, with a low most likely forming offshore. Cloudy with areas of rain and moderate falls contracting into southeast districts. Isolated showers and extensive drizzle areas persisting over the southern and central interior as well as over the southeast tropics. Isolated showers over the northeast tropics, tending scattered about the North Tropical Coast in the morning. Fine in the far west. Remaining cool to cold during the day in central and southeast districts due to the thick cloud cover. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds, fresh to strong and gusty at times along the Capricornia and southern Queensland coasts as the trough offshore deepens. Forecast for Thursday The upper trough moves off the southeast Queensland coast. The high moves further east across the Tasman Sea and continues to weaken, but will still extend a ridge along the east Queensland coast. The surface trough off the Capricornia and southern Queensland coasts begins to move east, while the low on the trough moves southeast to be located east of Fraser Island by night. As a result, strong and gusty S to SE winds persist along the Capricornia and southern Queensland coast. The thick cloud and rain areas contract to the far southeast of the state where it will remain cool to cold during the day. Isolated showers and morning drizzle areas persisting over the remainder of eastern Queensland and the northern tropics. Fine in the west. Forecast for Friday The high moves to near New Zealand and is expected to extend a weaker ridge along the north tropical coast with isolated showers over the northeast tropics. A new surface trough and very weak upper trough is expected to moves rapidly east across Queensland during the day, with drier S to SW winds developing over most of the interior. A warmer day in the west and south ahead of the trough. Isolated showers over southeast districts ahead of the trough, tending scattered along the far southern coast during the early morning. The trough and low well off the southeast Queensland coast are expected to continue moving away from the region with winds decreasing. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday A new ridge will extend across the state from Saturday with drier and cooler SW to SE winds over most areas. A weak ridge along the north tropical coast may result in isolated showers over the northeast tropics. A surface trough passing over southern Queensland during Sunday may result in isolated afternoon showers over the southern interior before fine and mostly sunny conditions return on Monday.
