MELBOURNE - Jun 24/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time The Strong Wind Warning between Torres Strait and Lockhart River has been cancelled. A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coast waters between Lockhart River and Burnett Heads. A Strong Wind Warning is current for southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A large high [1037hPa] over South Australia extends a ridge across New South Wales. The high will move slowly southeastwards to become centred over the eastern Great Australian Bight by late Monday. An upper level trough lies over the Queensland interior and is generating cloud and patchy rain over parts of eastern Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Remaining cloudy and cold over eastern districts between about Bowen and Brisbane with patchy light rain and drizzle. Isolated showers about the tropical east coast. Fine over the interior and far southeast of the state. Strong SE winds about southern Gulf of Carpentaria waters during the morning and late evening. Strong SE winds about the east coast between Lockhart River and Burnett Heads. Moderate SW to SE winds elsewhere, fresh about the coast and over western areas. Forecast for Monday Cloudy and cold over many eastern districts with light rain and drizzle areas. The cloud and light rain areas are expected to extend through the eastern Central West, Central Highlands, Coalfields, Central Coast, Capricornia, Wide and Burnett districts and into northern parts of the Southeast Coast district. Isolated showers over the northeast tropics which will increase about the North Tropical Coast late in the day. Fine and sunny over the remainder of the state. A cool morning over the southern interior with extensive early frost. Strong winds will persist along the east coast between Lockhart River and Burnett Heads and over the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria during the morning. Forecast for Tuesday The high pressure system should move into Victoria whilst the upper level trough moves eastwards across southern Queensland. The cloud and rain areas will extend further west into the Central West district and also into the northern Maranoa and Warrego district. Temperatures will remain well below average beneath the cloud band. Showers and drizzle areas will continue over eastern central districts and isolated showers will persist over the northeast tropics. Remaining fine and sunny over the far southern interior and far southeast of the state. Remaining fine and sunny in the west. Early frost areas are expected to become confined to far southern districts. Forecast for Wednesday The high pressure system should move eastwards across the Tasman Sea and weaken with winds gradually easing along the east coast. The upper trough will continue to move eastwards across the south of the state and become situated over the far southeast of the state late in the day. Cloudy and cool conditions with rain areas are likely to continue through the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central Coast, Capricornia and Wide and Burnett districts with the rainfall increasing in intensity due to the upper trough. Isolated showers and drizzle elsewhere along the east coast and adjacent inland. Fine and partly cloudy over the west of the state. A cool morning over the far southern interior with possible frosts. Forecast for Thursday The high should continue to moe eastwards across the Tasman Sea whilst a deep low crosses the Southern Ocean. The upper trough is likely to clear off the southeast coast during the day and develop a weak low pressure system off the southeast coast. Rain areas should become confined to the far southeast of the state. Cloudy conditions will persist southeast of Mackay to Cunnamulla with drizzle and isolated showers. Isolated showers elsewhere about the east coast. Fine and partly cloudy over the remainder of the state. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday A new high develops over southwest Australia during the outlook period with a ridge eventually extending from the high across most of the state during the weekend. This should bring fine and partly cloudy conditions to most of the state with cool south to southwest winds developing. Some showers are possible about the southeast of the state on Friday. Showers are likely to persist about the far northeast of the state throughout the outlook period. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Monday.
