Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 20/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1023 hPa] over the southwest Coral Sea extends a ridge over eastern
Queensland. The high is forecast to move east and weaken over the next couple of
days. A trough is forecast to approach southwest Queensland late today.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Fine and sunny for most of the state. Partly cloudy with isolated showers
along the central and tropical coasts, and about eastern Cape York Peninsula. A
cool to cold morning in most parts with areas of frost in the central and
southern interior as well as the southeast inland. Moderate to fresh SE winds
over the tropics. Light to moderate mostly NE to NW winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Friday
A trough is expected to move across the Queensland interior and lie from the
Gulf Country to Darling Downs in the evening. Increasing moisture ahead of the
trough may generate very isolated afternoon showers over the central interior
and southeast Queensland. Isolated showers will continue about the north
tropical coast and northern Cape York Peninsula in the onshore airstream with
isolated showers and early drizzle about the Capricornia coast and Wide Bay
coasts. High cloud will move over the southwest but with little or no rain. A
milder morning expected for most areas, with any early frost confined to near
the Granite Belt. A cooler day with SW winds in the wake of the trough over
western Queensland.
Forecast for Saturday
The trough is expected to clear the southeast coast during the early morning,
lying between the southeast Gulf and the Capricornia later in the day as a
strong high pressure system starts to build in the Great Australian Bight.
Isolated showers to persist about the northeast tropical coast as fresh winds
develop north of about Cairns and strong winds develop over southern Gulf of
Carpentaria waters. A cool morning in the south with morning frosts over the
southeast and southern interior.
Forecast for Sunday
The high pressure system will move over South Australia during the day,
strengthening the ridge along the east coast. Strong winds are expected along
the east coast north of about Bowen, and also in the southeast Gulf and far
northeast Gulf. Isolated showers along the coast and adjacent inland north of
about Townsville. A cool to cold morning in the south with morning frosts over
the southeast and southern interior.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The high pressure system remains slow moving about southeastern Australia and
strengthens. Expect dry SW to SE winds across most of the state once again,
tending SE with isolated showers along the northeast tropical coast.
Temperatures below average in most areas, especially at night, with morning
frosts continuing about the central, southern and southeast interior of the
state. Strong SE winds to persist along the north tropical coast and over Gulf
of Carpentaria waters.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
