Weather Situation
A high [1024 hPa] over New South Wales is moving slowly east and into the
southern Coral Sea on Thursday. The high extends a ridge along the east coast
and also into southern Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Fine and clear for most of the state. Partly cloudy along the north tropical
coast and over northern Cape York Peninsula with isolated showers. Moderate to
fresh SE winds over the tropics, strong at times about the northern east coast.
Light to moderate mostly SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Thursday
Fine and sunny for most of the state. Partly cloudy along the central and
tropical coasts, and about northern Cape York Peninsula with isolated showers,
extending into the adjacent inland during the afternoon. High cloud extending
into the far southwest during the afternoon and evening. A cool to cold morning
in most parts with areas of frost in the central and southern interior as well
as the southeast inland. Moderate to fresh SE winds over the tropics. Light to
moderate mostly SE to NE winds elsewhere, tending NW in the far west.
Forecast for Friday
The trough is expected to move across the Queensland interior and lie from
the Gulf Country to Darling Downs in the evening. Increasing moisture ahead of
the trough may generate very isolated afternoon showers over the central
interior and southeast Queensland. Cloud moving over the southwest but with
little or no rain. A milder morning expected for most areas, with any early
frost confined to near the Granite Belt. A cool morning is still expected in
the northwest of the state. Isolated showers will continue about the north
tropical coast and northern Cape York Peninsula in the onshore airstream.
Isolated showers and early drizzle about the Capricornia coast and Wide Bay. A
cooler day with SW winds in the wake of the trough over the southwest.
Forecast for Saturday
The trough is expected to clear the southeast coast during the early morning,
lying between the southeast Gulf and the Capricornia later in the day as a
strong high pressure system starts to build in the Great Australian Bight.
Isolated showers to persist about the northeast tropical coast as strong winds
develop north of about Cairns and over Gulf of Carpentaria waters. Morning fogs
likely along the Central and Capricornia coasts. A cool morning in the south
with morning frosts over the southeast and southern interior.
Forecast for Sunday
The high pressure system will move into the eastern Great Australian Bight
during the day, strengthening the ridge along the east coast. Strong winds
expected along the east coast north of about Bowen, and also in the southeast
Gulf and far northeast Gulf. Isolated showers along the coast and adjacent
inland north of about Townsville. A cool morning in the south with morning
frosts over the southeast and southern interior.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The high pressure system remains slow moving about southeastern Australia and
strengthens. Expect dry SW to SE winds across most of the state once again,
tending SE with isolated showers along the northeast tropical coast.
Temperatures are once again expected to be below average in most areas,
especially at night, with morning frosts returning to the central, southern and
southeast interior of the state. Strong SE winds to persist along the north
tropical coast and over Gulf of Carpentaria waters.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
