MELBOURNE - Jun 18/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and Cooktown. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1027hPa] over South Australia is moving slowly east and extends a ridge across southern Queensland and along the north tropical coast. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Fine and sunny across most of the state. Only isolated showers over northern Cape York Peninsula and along the east coast north of about Cairns. A cool to cold morning in most areas with widespread early frost areas in the central, southern and southeast interior. Light to moderate SW to SE winds, fresh at times over the northwest and along the tropical coast. SE winds becoming strong at times along the north tropical coast in the afternoon. Forecast for Wednesday The high is expected to move into northeast New South Wales and maintain a firm ridge with fresh to strong SE winds and isolated showers along the north tropical coast. Isolated showers will also occur over northern Cape York Peninsula in the onshore airstream, and may develop about the Whitsundays during the day. Relatively dry and cool SW to SE winds will continue to circulate across the remainder of the state with fine and sunny conditions. A cool to cold morning in most areas with morning frosts in the southeast, central and southern interior. Forecast for Thursday The high is expected to move slowly east across the far southern Coral Sea and maintain the ridge along the east coast. The ridge will persist along the tropical coast with moderate to fresh SE winds and isolated showers, spreading into the adjacent inland in the afternoon. Some cloud will also spread into the eastern interior of the state in the afternoon but conditions should remain fine. Elsewhere, fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected to prevail as winds turn NE to NW. Morning frosts will again occur over the southeast, central and southern interior; though a warmer day is expected in the west due to the NE to NW winds ahead of a trough system moving over South Australia and entering the far southwest of the state in the evening. Some cloud may accompany the trough but with no rain. Forecast for Friday The trough is expected to move across the Queensland interior and lie from the Gulf Country to Darling Downs in the evening. Increasing moisture ahead of the trough may generate isolated afternoon showers over the central interior and southeast Queensland. A milder morning expected for most areas, with any early frost expected to be confined to near the Granite Belt. However, a cool morning is still expected in the northwest of the state. Isolated showers will continue about the north tropical coast and northern Cape York Peninsula in the onshore airstream. Isolated showers and early drizzle about the Capricornia coast and Wide Bay. A cooler day in the wake of the trough over the southwest with SW winds. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The trough is expected to pass off the east Queensland coast on Saturday, allowing the next ridge to extend across western and southern Queensland during this period as a strong high pressure system moves into the Great Australian Bight from Sunday. This is expected to lead to dry SW to SE winds across most of the state once again, except for isolated showers along the north tropical coast and over northern Cape York Peninsula. Temperatures are once again expected to be below average in most areas, especially at night, with early frosts returning to the central, southern and southeast interior of the state. Strong SE winds redeveloping along the north tropical coast and over Gulf of Carpentaria waters. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Tuesday.
