MELBOURNE - Jun 17/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for Southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A trough is moving east over the Coral Sea, connected to a deepening low over the Tasman Sea. A high [1028 hPa] over South Australia is moving slowly east and extends a strengthening ridge over western Queensland. The ridge is spreading dry SW to SE winds across most of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Isolated showers over northern Cape York Peninsula. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Moderate SW to SE winds, fresh at times along the coast and in the northwest. Forecast for Monday Isolated showers over northern Cape York Peninsula and along the east coast north of about Cooktown. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A cool to cold morning in most areas with early frosts in the central, southern and southeast interior. Light to moderate SW to SE winds, fresh and gusty at times along the coast and in the northwest. Forecast for Tuesday The high will move eastwards across New South Wales. Dry and cool SW to SE winds will continue to circulate across nearly all of the state with fine and sunny conditions in most areas. The exception will be about northern Cape York Peninsula and the north tropical coast where isolated showers will occur in the moist moderate to fresh SE trade flow. These winds may become strong at times north of Cairns late in the day. Widespread morning frosts will occur over the southeast, central and southern interior. Forecast for Wednesday The high will move into the Tasman Sea late in the day and will maintain a firm ridge along the east coast. Relatively dry and cool S to SE winds will circulate across nearly all of the state. About the east coast these winds will be moister and as a result isolated showers will spread southwards from the north tropical coast into most remaining east coast districts. Fine and sunny conditions will continue over the interior of the state. The SE winds will remain fresh to strong along the east coast north of about Cooktown. Widespread morning frosts will again occur over the southeast, central and southern interior. Forecast for Thursday The high is expected to move slowly east across the Tasman Sea and maintain the ridge along the east coast. Relatively dry S to SE winds will persist over the interior of the state. About the east coast these winds will be moister with isolated showers, spreading into the adjacent inland in the afternoon. Fine and sunny conditions will continue over the interior of the state. The SE winds will be moderate to fresh along the tropical east coast. Morning frosts will again occur over the southeast, central and southern interior though a warmer day is expected in the west due to northerly winds ahead of a trough system moving over South Australia. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The high will continue to move slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea on Friday before moving to the east of New Zealand on the weekend. The ridge along the east Queensland Coast will weaken with isolated showers in the onshore stream mainly about the tropical east coast. Most of the interior will continue fine and warm due to NE to NW winds ahead of the trough and S'ly change which will move across the state during Friday and Saturday and pass off the east coast by Sunday. However, increasing moisture ahead of the trough may lead to isolated afternoon showers over the eastern interior with milder mornings. Dry and cooler conditions are once again expected to spread across the state in the wake of the trough on Sunday as a new and rather strong high pressure system moves east over the Great Australian Bight. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Monday. Weather & Warnings Australia New South Wales Victoria Queensland Warnings Summary Forecasts Brisbane Forecast Qld.
