Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 16/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high pressure system [1023 hPa] over the northern Tasman Sea extends a
ridge along the tropical coast. An upper trough and associated surface trough
moving eastwards across the Queensland interior are expected to move off the
central and southern Queensland coasts early Sunday. A new high [1026 hPa] is
expected to move into South Australia on Sunday and extend a ridge across
central and southern Queensland with cooler and drier SW to SE winds.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Mostly cloudy with isolated showers about the tropical east coast and
northern Cape York Peninsula. Isolated showers and drizzle about the Wide Bay
and Capricornia. Cloudy over the southern and southeast interior with light
rain. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Moderate SE to NE winds over the tropics.
Moderate to fresh NE to NW winds over southern Queensland, shifting S to SW over
the west and southern interior.
Forecast for Sunday
Cloud and light rain clearing from the southeast inland early in the morning.
Early showers and drizzle about Fraser Island. Isolated showers along the north
tropical coast and over northern Cape York Peninsula. Scattered morning fogs
about the east coast and nearby ranges. Moderate to fresh and gusty W to SW
winds over the far southeast of the state. Moderate SW to SE winds, fresh and
gusty about parts of the east coast and northwest of the state.
Forecast for Monday
The high is expected to move over northern South Australia and continue to
extend dry and cool SW to SE winds across nearly all of the state. Fine and
sunny conditions will occur in most areas. The exception will be about the east
coast north of about Cairns where isolated showers will occur in the moist,
moderate to fresh SE trade flow. A cool to cold morning in most areas with
widespread morning frosts in the southeast, central and southern interior.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high will continue to move eastwards into northern New South Wales whilst
a weak upper trough moves east across Queensland. Dry and cool SW to SE winds
will continue to circulate across nearly all of the state. Fine and sunny
conditions will occur in most areas. The exception will be about the east coast
north about Cairns where isolated showers will occur in the moist moderate to
fresh SE trade flow. These winds may become strong at times north of Cairns late
in the day. The weak upper trough may also increase instability enough in the
southeast of the state to produce isolated coastal showers. Widespread morning
frosts will occur over the southeast, central and southern interior.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high is expected to be located over far eastern New South Wales and
maintain a firm ridge along the north tropical coast. Dry and cool SW to SE
winds will continue to circulate across nearly all of the state with fine and
mostly sunny conditions. However, the onshore flow is expected to bring isolated
showers to most of the east coast, particularly in the northern tropics where SE
winds will remain fresh to strong. Widespread morning frosts will again occur
over the southeast, central and southern interior.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The high will continue to move slowly eastwards during this period and move
across the Tasman Sea during Thursday and Friday. Winds across the state will
shift to the E to SE and continue to moisten about the east coast. As well,
these winds will remain moderate to fresh along most of the east tropical coast.
Showers will affect most coastal areas and are likely to extend a little further
inland into the eastern interior from Friday. Morning frosts will continue over
most of the central and southern interior on Thursday before increasing moisture
leads to milder mornings on Friday and Saturday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
