MELBOURNE - Jun 3/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A flood warning is current for coastal rivers and streams from Rainbow Beach to the New South Wales border. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A slow moving upper level trough extended across south-west Queensland. A surface trough extended over the south-east inland of Queensland and will move off the coast during the morning. A large high south of the Great Australian Bight will move to the north-east and dominate the weather across the state from about Wednesday onwards. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Cloudy over the south-east of the state with rain areas and isolated storms decreasing to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms from the northwest during the day. Isolated showers will occur over remaining east coast districts and the adjacent inland. Isolated showers will occur over the south-west. Some morning fogs over the central and southern interior. Fine over the north-west. A cool day through much of the state, particularly under the cloud. Light to moderate N to W winds over the south-east with moderate SW to SE winds elsewhere. Morning fog areas through the central, southern and south-east interior. Forecast for Monday A new upper trough will move into north-west New South wales and will spread a band of showers and isolated storms across southern inland parts. Morning fog areas will occur over much of the south-east of the state. Relatively dry and cool SW to SE winds will spread across northern and central areas of the state and will contract any stream showers to north of the Cairns area. In the south of the state W'ly winds will continue. Forecast for Tuesday The upper low will move eastwards along the southern border and pass seawards late in the day. As this system moves eastwards it will produce some sleet about the Granite Belt area and also isolated showers and storms along the southern border ranges. Winds will become fresh and gusty across the south-east of the state and particularly about the south-east corner as a surface low and trough deepens over the Tasman Sea and eastern New South Wales. As well, conditions will become cloudy over much of the southern inland in the afternoon and produce isolated drizzle areas. In the north of the state the dry S to SE winds will spread further northwards and contract any stream showers onto far northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Strong SE winds will occur across south-east Gulf of Carpentaria waters in the morning due to the tight pressure gradient from the high. Forecast for Wednesday The high will dominate the weather across the state and will drive cool SW to SE winds across most of the state. Ridging from the high will push a surge of strong S'ly winds along the far southern coast during the afternoon and evening. Isolated showers will develop with these winds and affect exposed parts of the far southern coast by evening. Again conditions will become cloudy over the southern and central interior in the afternoon with only isolated drizzle likely. Isolated showers will continue over far northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will occur elsewhere. Strong SE winds will occur across south-east Gulf of Carpentaria waters in the morning due to the tight pressure gradient from the high. A large and powerful S'ly swell is also expected to extend north into southern waters during the day, generating rough surf conditions. Temperatures will remain well below average over much of the state. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday The high will move only slowly into and across south-eastern Australia and will therefore continue to dominate the weather across the state. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds will continue across most of the state and will maintain fine and mostly sunny conditions over the interior. Isolated showers will occur in most east coast districts in the S to SE airflow. From Friday onwards these showers will spill over into the central and south-east interior and surrounds as a new upper trough moves into south-eastern Australia and Queensland. Frosts will be quite widespread across the central, southern and southeast interior during Thursday and Friday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Sunday.
