Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 2/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1028 hPa] near New Zealand will continue weakening during Sunday. A
slow moving upper level trough lies over southwestern Queensland. A surface
trough extends over the Central West and Warrego districts and is expected to
move east into eastern districts on Sunday.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Cloudy with scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over
areas east of Longreach and south of about Mackay. Moderate to heavy falls are
likely. Scattered showers and patchy rain over remaining central districts and
the southern tropics, with possible isolated thunderstorms. Isolated showers
over the northern tropics, increasing to scattered inland. Cloudy with isolated
showers and drizzle over the southwest. Fine in the northwest. Light to moderate
SE to NE winds over the east of the state, fresh at times about the coast.
Moderate SW to SE winds over the west of the state.
Forecast for Sunday
Cloudy over southeast and central districts with rain areas and isolated
thunderstorms, decreasing to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms from
the northwest during the day. Some moderate to heavy falls are likely,
particularly during the morning. Isolated showers over the tropics. Remaining
mostly cloudy over the southern interior with isolated showers and areas of
drizzle. Some morning fogs over the central and southern interior, particularly
through the Maranoa and Warrego district. Fine in the northwest. A cool day
through much of the state, particularly under the cloud. Light to moderate NW to
NE winds over central and southeast districts. Moderate to fresh SW to SE winds
elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
The surface trough will move off the southeast coast during the morning,
clearing any remaining showers and patchy rain to sea. A low will deepen near
the coast of New South Wales, extending cool to cold SW'ly winds and cloudy
conditions into the southern interior of Queensland. Isolated showers and
drizzle areas are expected, particularly over the Darling Downs and Granite Belt
district. Cloudy conditions will also continue through the eastern and far
northern tropics with isolated showers expected. Fine, cool and mostly sunny
conditions will occur elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
The low will deepen further off the New South Wales coast. The moist SW'ly
wind flow through the southern Queensland interior will subsequently freshen
further, with cold and cloudy conditions and isolated showers and drizzle areas
expected. Cloudy conditions will continue through the northern tropics, though
with only isolated showers expected. A dry airmass will extend over remaining
parts of the state, resulting in fine and mostly sunny conditions. S to SE winds
will most likely strengthen over southeastern Gulf of Carpentaria waters during
the morning, while W to SW winds will most likely strengthen over southern
Queensland waters during the evening.
Forecast for Wednesday
The low will most likely shift north over the Tasman Sea, extending a very
strong S'ly wind flow into southern Queensland waters. A large and powerful S'ly
swell is also expected to extend north into southern waters during the day,
generating rough surf conditions. Cloudy conditions will continue through the
southern interior and extend a little further north into the central interior,
with possible areas of drizzle and isolated showers. Showers will also develop
on the exposed southern coast and islands. Isolated showers will occur over the
tropics north of Cairns. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue over
remaining areas under a dry airmass. Temperatures will remain well below average
over much of the state.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The deep low over the Tasman Sea will most likely move southeast during the
outlook period as a new high moves east over the Great Australian Bight and into
southeastern Australia. S'ly winds and swell will therefore gradually decrease
along the southern coast. Isolated to scattered showers will occur along the
exposed southern coast, extending to remaining parts of the east coast as winds
tend more moist onshore SE'ly late in the week. Isolated showers may also
develop inland of the southern tropical and southeast coasts from Friday.
Conditions should be fine though partly cloudy elsewhere over the interior.
Early frosts will become much more likely through the central, southern and
southeast interior as winds ease and skies start to clear.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
