Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 1/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1033 hPa] over the Tasman Sea is expected to weaken as it drifts
eastwards over the next few days. An upper level trough near Queensland's
southwestern border is expected to move drift slowly eastwards.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Cloudy with scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the
southern districts, with some moderate to locally heavy falls possible about the
state's southwest. Mainly fine in the northwest except for some isolated, mainly
light showers. Mainly isolated showers and storms over the remainder of the
state, spreading to patchy rain areas late in the day. A cool to cold day in
most areas. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds along the east coast. Light to
moderate S to SW winds over the western districts, and moderate to fresh E to NE
winds over the remainder of the state.
Forecast for Saturday
The high should weaken further near New Zealand and the upper level trough is
likely to remain near Queensland's southwest, producing scattered showers,
isolated storms and areas of rain over the southern districts, and some moderate
to locally heavy falls possible about parts of the southern interior. Scattered
showers and mainly isolated thunderstorms across the eastern tropics, spreading
to areas of patchy rain during the day. Isolated showers over the state's far
southwest. Maximum temperatures remaining below average across most of the
state, particularly over the western districts.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough is expected to drift gradually eastwards across the Channel
Country, accompanied by a surface low pressure area over the northern interior
of New South Wales. The eastward movement of the upper trough should allow the
thundery rain areas to contract eastwards into the southeast quarter of the
state. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the
eastern tropics. FIne and cool to cold in the west of the state except for some
isolated showers over the Channel Country. Maximum temperatures should be below
average across most of the state.
Forecast for Monday
The thundery rain should clear off the southeast coast during the morning,
but cold westerly winds are expected to build across the southern districts
during the day, and areas of drizzle should develop about the southern interior.
Fine though cool to cold over the remainder of the state except for some
isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northeast tropics, clearing
overnight.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
A deep low off the New South Wales coast is likely to move slowly east across
the Tasman Sea, while a strong high should remain to the south of the continent.
These two weather systems are likely to combine to drive cold and gusty S to SW
winds across most of the state, and areas of drizzle over the southern interior
and possibly also over the Atherton Tablelands. Winds should ease on Thursday
as the high weakens. Widespread morning frost areas over the southern and
central interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
